A Study on Social Media Why Google+ Can’t Break Through the Clutter
Buzz surrounding Google+ • But what do students, particularly UNC students think? • Surveyed over 100 students • Concerns • What they most enjoyed • Pinpoint the critical factors surrounding the lack of popularity
Methodology • Target: UNC Students (18-22) • proportionate to student body • Procedure • over 100 students • online and print surveys • Surveyed individuals with/without a Google+ account. • Compare Google+ to other social media sites.
Question format: • Closed-ended • Dichotomous • Semantic differential • Likert Scale • Guttman • Activity level/involvement • Determined the positive and negative aspects of Google+ from students
Privacy Research showed Google+ had greater privacy issues since it encourages additional personal information Our survey results showed "privacy" tied with "time-consumption" as the major concern for UNC students The mean was 5.4 which was not as high as we assumed it would be
LinkedIn • Research showed college-age adults are using social media to search for jobs and make future connections • When asked if they use social media sites for professional networking, UNC students responded with a mean of 4.3 • This is the lowest mean of the 5 options • Only 18% of our sample are members of LinkedIn. • 89% of the positive responders check their account 0-3 times a week
Twitter 76%of respondents are on Twitter50% check their account daily 11% check it 10+ times each day
Facebook 99% of respondents on Facebook 79% check daily 11% of those check 10+ times daily
Competitors • Twitter and Facebook have already met the needs of social media site users • Google+ was late and did not provide a unique competitive advantage over others • LinkedIn (2003): professional networking • Facebook (2004): photos, groups, chat, etc. • Twitter (2006): short and simple statuses • Google+ (2011): what's unique?
Google+ • Use is remarkably low in comparison • Google+: 18 friends • 100 friends. • Facebook: 948 Friends • 2,473 Friends.
Google+ • Wrong approach- No need for Facebook competitor • Twitter attacked different market • People aren't blown away on features • Need change fast to remain relevant
Conclusion Social Media • Mainly for keeping up with friends • Facebook and Twitter are enough to do this • Popular among students Google+ • Has nothing new to provide the public • UNC students liked the use of "Circles" the most, but now Facebook has adopted a similar system • 64 out of 100 respondents don't have Google+ and those that did said they were less likely to continue using it
