Dan Butler Michael Massa Chris Moran Victoria Cardenas Can Crusher
Group Development Leader: Victoria Timekeeper: Dan Scribe: Michael and Chris
Problem Statement As engineers at Alpha Engineering Company, we need to build a can crusher to reduce the Roadrunner Trucking Company’s aluminum can disposal by 70% or the company will receive a penalty per can disposed.
Background and Justification • Design a can crusher • Reduce waste by 70% • Company will receive $0.05 can disposed
Customer • Completed Can Crusher • Roadrunner Trucking Company • Technical Report and PowerPoint • Mr. Pritchard, ITC Instructor
Scope • Design and build a can crusher • Crusher contains a trash receptacle • Must include a simple machine • All work will be documented and presented • Work handed off to customers
Scope • Use expertise of • Technical: Mr. Pritchard • CAD/Inventor: Mr. Hund • Mathematics: Ms. Hernacki
Scope • Materials • Wood • PVC pipe • Metal brackets and hinges • Screws and nails
Scope • Scheduling Issues • Victoria: after school sports • Dan: difficulty arriving early • Michael: varying schedule • Chris: varying schedule
Deliverables • Technical Report and PowerPoint • Mr. Pritchard: May 18,2012 • Can Crusher • Roadrunner Trucking Company: May 18, 2012 • PowerPoint Presentations • ITC Class: May 21, 2012
Brainstorming • What are the dimensions of a crushed can? • What are simple machines? • What materials would be most cost effective and reliable? • How can a self-loading system be incorporated in to the design of the can crusher? • How much force does it take to crush a can?
Research and Generate Ideas • Fill this in
Criteria and Constraints • Maximum space can crusher can occupy is 18” by 24” by 30”. • Materials that can be used are wood, PVC, metal brackets and hinges, screws, and nails. • Must use a minimum of one simple machine. • Aluminum can can be placed in to the can crusher, but a 5% bonus will be awarded if a self-loading system is developed.
Criteria and Constraints • Aluminum can must fall in to the trash receptacle once it is crushed. • Trash receptacle must be able to slide in and out of the can crusher. • Trash receptacle must be sized to hold 20 crushed cans, calculations must be included in technical report. • Can crusher must be completely fabricated.
Criteria and Constraints • Can crusher design must be one unit. • Can crusher must be manually operated. • Nothing can be used to puncture or dent the can prior to crushing. • Our work group must supply 20 cans for testing.
