Moses & the Exodus • God told Moses to lead his people out of Egypt • 10 plagues • 10th plague killed all first born sons EXCEPT in houses where the mark of lamb’s blood was in the doorway • Cross the parted Red Sea
Mt. Sinai & 10 Commandments • Exodus back to Canaan was about 40 years • Moses receives the moral laws of God on Mt. Sinai → Ten Commandments • Torah, received by Moses, becomes the first part of Hebrew Bible and explains the covenant, or agreement, with God.
Ten Commandments & “rule of law” • Some commandments tell you how to interact with others • Other commandments tell you how to worship and show respect to God Rule of Law: Laws apply to everyone equally
Canaanites known as Phoenicians • Canaanite neighbors to the north are the sailors & traders known as Phoenicians • Most important idea passed along during trade was the alphabet, which used sounds rather than pictures to communicate
3-2 Kingdom of IsraelMain Idea: Israelites chose a king to unite them against their enemies Philistines were the strongest people in Canaan because they knew how to make iron weapons. 12 Tribes knew they had to UNITE against the Philistines. Samuel chose Saul as the first king but soon God was not pleased by Saul’s disobedience.
King David • Drove out the Philistines (David v. Goliath) • Created an empire • Forced conquered lands to pay tribute • Israelites paid heavy taxes • Formed a new capital city of Jerusalem • Remembered as their greatest king
King Solomon Son of DavidKnown for wise sayings = Proverbs Built the temple in Jerusalem, which was a symbol of the Jewish religion (it was lavish!!) Paid for with high taxes Forced work to get more $
Troubled Times Main Idea: The Israelites were conquered and forced to leave Israel and Judah #1. The now divided Is. Kingdoms are weak and threatened. Many even forgot their religion ↓ #2. Israel kingdom first to fall to the brutal Assyrians, who scatter the 10 tribes
#3. Assyrians become Samaritans (from capital, Samaria), read Torah & worship the one God ↓ #4. small, land-locked Judah is only kingdom left…..Egyptians conquer it
#5 Even stronger Chaldeans take over Judah ↓ #6 Nebuchadnezzar, the Chaldean king, forces many Jews to leave Jerusalem and sends them all the way to Babylon ↓ #7 Jews try to revolt ONE more time. Neb. destroys temple & thousands exiled to Babylon (Babylonian Captivity)
3-3 Growth of Judaism Main Idea: Jews continued their religion during their exile in Babylon • Still meet together on the Sabbath • come together at a synogogue
