  5. University Scholars Program in Mechanical Engineering • Approved by UA Graduate School: Spring 2004 • A program aimed at outstanding undergraduate students(3.5 overall GPA, junior or senior) • USP-ME students allowed to take up to 6 hours of dual credit courses, i.e. courses which can be applied to both the BSME and MSME degrees • Will help to recruit our own undergraduate students • Please announce to your undergraduate students!

MSME Core Classes • Question: Do we want to have a core sequence of classes? • Possible MSME Thermal Systems core classes:- ME 501 Engineering Analysis- ME 509 Intermediate Heat Transfer- ME 605 Classical Thermodynamics- AEM 500 Intermediate Fluid Mechanics • Possible Mechanical Systems core classes • Reevaluation of graduate course offerings(new people, new courses, removal of courses no longer taught)

SACS Accreditation • Expected Learning Outcomes • Results of Assessment • Improvements Based on Assessment • Need to Develop Assessment Tools- Yearly Faculty Survey (obtained during annual faculty retreat)- Exit Survey (obtained just after thesis/dissertation defense)- Exit Interview (obtained by Department Head) • Need to Establish Assessment Goals

GTA Assignments • GTA positions as a recruiting tool? • GTA Committee Membership- Department Head, Chair of Committee- Graduate Program Coordinator- Faculty Member (one year rotating assignment) • GTA Assignment Committee- Identify GTA commitments (GCF awards, start-up, etc.)- XX% of uncommitted GTA positions to recruit students (using GCF model for awards process)- Award Guidelines • GTA Assignment Guidelines- No faculty member should have more than 1 student supported using GTA funds (unless as part of a GCF commitment)- GTA awards are for a single year (unless otherwise specified by Department Head)

  9. Graduate Student Seminars • Scheduled for:Tuesday (or possibly Thursday ??)12:30 pm – 1:30 pmHR 252 • Fall Seminar Assignments • Spring Student Paper Competition • Refreshments • Outside Speakers

  10. Miscellaneous • Students must confirm their schedule- Even if they receive a graduate fellowship or scholarship, their schedule will be cancelled if not confirmed- Additional information: graduate.ua.edu/registration.html • Students should complete a Plan of Study as soon as possible
