  3. Purpose of Study • Development of anti-smoking educational video for adolescents • Evaluate the effectiveness of anti-smoking video-and discussion-based educational method for high school students living in an urban area, South Korea

  4. Method of Study; study design • Study subjects were composed of three co-ed groups; • 1) a video-and-discussion group (161 subjects), • 2) a lecture only group (149 subjects), • 3) a control group (162 subjects).

Content of the Video • 1) Reasons for smoking : Some myths about smoking such as stress reduction and weight loss • 2) Facts about tobacco : Toxic substances in tobacco smoke and their effects on health • 3) Smoking rates : Smoking in adolescence • 4) Decision for not-smoking : Reasons to quit smoking

Discussion Theme • What do you expect from smoking? • Write a diary for a few days(write about smoking behavior of yourself or your friends) • What are the new facts about the effects of smoking on health? • Investigate the influence of smoking on our society • What causes the high prevalence of youth smoking in our country? • Talk about bad experience caused by others smoking. • Write down your reasons for quitting smoking • Talk about some success stories of smokers who quit smoking.

  13. Conclusion • Experience of smoking was significantly related to gender and family members smoking habit. • Knowledge of adverse effects of smoking increased significantly as a result of the educational intervention.

  14. A significant attitude change was found at the end of the program implementation. But the attitude change was not sustained until one month follow up. • Smoking students' intention of quitting smoking increased significantly after the intervention, but was not maintained.

  15. Overall the video program was an interesting material to the high school students. Participation of TV stars in the anti-smoking video program was more likely to have attracted the interest of non-smoking students, though this was not statistically significant. • This implies that Participation of TV stars in the anti-smoking activities can be an effective media strategy of smoking prevention.

  16. Implication • For smoking students, intention of quitting was significantly negatively related to positive attitude toward smoking. In addition, for smoking students, attitude toward smoking was inversely related to knowledge. Information dissemination is an important factor for no-smoking education. • More intense and continuos anti-smoking intervention needed for anti-smoking programs.
