  3. Task 1 Reflection - What do you think you did well? - What do you want to improve? - Overall, how do you feel about your performance?

  4. Tips for being persuasive 1. Organization Follow this basic format: - Tell them what you’re going to tell them. - Tell them. - Tell them what you told them.

  5. Tips for being persuasive Tell them what you’re going to tell them. - Interesting Hook - Introduction - Statement of the speech’s purpose (position)

  6. Tips for being persuasive Tell them. - Reasons to support your position. - Evidence to support your reasons.

  7. Tips for being persuasive Tell them what you told them. - Closing comments. - Re-statement of your position (“Therefore, …”)

  8. Tips for being persuasive 1. Language A few language tips: - Put the main verb early in the sentence. - Consider using short sentences and phrases. - Use “striking” (emotional) language. - Use 3-part lists where possible. - Organize with sign-posting. - KISS

Language tips for speeches Put the main verb early in the sentence • especially if it is a long sentence. i.e., "When we have all the facts and we have considered all the options, we shall make our decision“ vs. "We shall make our decision, when we have all the facts and we have considered all the options" .

  10. Language tips for speeches Consider using short sentences or even short phrases • for dramatic effect. i.e., "Failure is not an option.“ "The place is here. The time is now. The prize is great".  "Never again", "No excuses".

  11. Language tips for speeches use a redundant, but attention-seeking, short sentence. i.e., "I say this to you…“ "Let me be clear…“ “And remember this…”

  12. Language tips for speeches Use “striking” adjectives and adverbs i.e., "We face many challenges.“ vs. "We face many exciting challenges.“ "We will work on our problems.“ vs. "We will work energetically on our problems."

  13. Language tips for speeches Use three-part lists (where possible). i.e., "Government of the people, by the people, and for the people“ (Abraham Lincoln, 1863). "The ultimate case for the third way is that it works - good values, good vision, good policies“ (Bill Clinton, 2002).

Language tips for speeches KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) - Don’t try to impress with complicated terminology. i.e., "neoclassical endogenous growth theory and a symbiotic relationship between investment in people and infrastructure" Advice: “As a rule, simplicity of language marks superb speech making".

  18. Task 2- Pt. 1 Get a new partner (not podcast or Task 1 partner) • Decide on a topic you are BOTH interested in and have opinions about. If you have opposite opinions, that is even better. *** Choose a topic that has multiple perspectives! • Research the topic. • Each partner chooses a position (i.e., one partner supports, the other opposes) • Each of you will prepare a short (3 – 4 min.) speech to support your position.
