  2. What is VTAC? VTAC - Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, is the central point for applications to Victorian Universities, TAFE’s and Independent Tertiary Colleges. VTAC collects the raw study score from the VCAA to calculate the ATAR for VCE students. • course applications • special consideration • scholarship applications • admissions tests

  11. The VTAC CourseSearch app • Available free for iOS and Android • After downloading, browse course information online or offline • You can also use the Prerequisite and Course Explorer from inside the app – enter your VCE studies to find courses where you meet the prerequisites

Prerequisite and Course Explorer is available in the VTAC app • Prerequisites are displayed in the search results (no need to click through) • Students choose whether to look at 2019, 2020, or 2021 entry on the initial search screen • In addition to the search by subjects, results can be filtered by keyword and other filters

Fee types Course codes ending in: 1: CSP are Commonwealth Supported Places (subsidised) available for Australian Citizens, New Zealand citizens & permanent VISA holder who will live & study in Australia for the whole course 2: Domestic fee places 3: International fee places 4: Fee-type determined by provider at enrolment (usually subsidised for Year 12 students under 20 years of age) Information about study loans is available on the Study Assist website: http://www.studyassist.gov.au

Essential requirements and admission criteria • Students need to read both sections, as admission criteria can also be compulsory • The same item (e.g. prerequisites) might appear in different sections depending on to whom the requirement applies • VTAC has added an “at a glance” summary table at the top of the section to assist applicants in understanding the full range of requirements

  20. How does selection work? Applicants for an example course selecting on ATAR with 4 places and 6 applicants: Lowest ATAR offered a place is 75.00 Lowest selection rank is 85.00

Things to remember when looking at published ATARs for a course • The ATAR profile and lowest selection rank can provide you with an indication of how competitive it might be to get into a course • However, these are not a cut-off or guarantee, just an indication of what happened last year • It’s still worth applying for a course you want even if your ATAR is lower than last year’s lowest selection rank because: • The lowest selection rank might change for next year • You might receive subject adjustments or special consideration which boosts your rank higher than your ATAR

Create a VTAC account • All VTAC applications are completed online using the same VTAC ID and PIN • Creating an account is a simple question-based process • If you’re a current Year 12 student, make sure you enter your VCAA student number so that VTAC can access your results later in the year

New: school-based email address warning • An alert message now appears if a student enters an “edu.au” address • This warning is to prevent students being unable to access offers if the school email account has been closed by January • The message is a warning only: the student can still choose to proceed with using the school-based email address

Tips for your VTAC account • Only create one VTAC account • For current Year 12 applicants, use a personal email address NOT your school email • Choose a secure PIN and security questions you will remember • Choose an authorised nominee if needed: • VTAC cannot discuss your application with anyone except you (not even your parents) unless you have specified an authorised nominee when registering.

  27. Course application steps Not needed for most current Year 12 students. Pre-filled for current Year 12 students. Claim Year 11 Unit 3&4 subjects if needed. Supplementary offers and newspaper publications permission. Statistics: Indigenous status, disability, and parent/guardian education. 8 course preferences

Claiming senior secondary subjects from previous years • Most commonly applies to VCE students who completed one or more Unit 3&4 studies while in Year 11 • Especially important for other studies to be claimed here if they were completed under a different student number or as part of different qualification (e.g. interstate or IB for a VCE student)

Applying for courses Listeight courses/institutions • Preference order – always list courses in the order you want to get into them • To add course preferences: Select institution and/or course or type in the course code • To move a course on the preference list use the up/down buttons • To delete a course use the xbuttonwatch out for courses with early closing datesthey cannot be re-added • Preference 8 must be a Pathway course ie Cert III/IV or Diploma/Advanced Diploma

  31. Authorised nominee • Most applicants do not need to designate an authorised nominee • This can be added/changed/removed later from the ‘Course Application’ tab • See the VTAC website for policy information about what authorised nominees can and cannot access

After submitting course application • Application receipt sent by email and in user account • Submit payment by the closing date • Unpaid applications areNOTsubmitted to institutions • Complete any applicable selection requirements • E.g. personal statement, providing any documents requested by VTAC • Apply for SEAS and Scholarships • Change preferences and update personal information

Personal statement • A statement for course selection officers to consider, completed online through the VTAC user account • Writing prompts include your motivation for study, academic performance, and previous ‘relevant’ work experience • If not specified as a requirement by the course, selection officers are not obliged to consider the information provided • Usually not required for current Year 12 applicantsunless they have relevant work experience or it is a mandatory admission requirement of the course. Check course entry requirement. • Four general questions plus one course specific statement for each preference • The same statement is provided to all courses except the course specific statement

Change of Preference • After applying, you can change your course preferences free-of-charge as many times as you like while Change of Preference is open • Check the deadlines carefully prior to the start of each round • The deadline for the new early December Round is 4pm, Saturday 14th December 2019 • Get your preferences in the order you want by this date to maximise your chance of getting the offer you want • This early round offer is released on Wednesday 18th December @ 2pm • Change of preference will re-open from 4pm on this date until 4pm Friday 20th December • VTAC’s main course offering is 15th January 2020 where up to 80% of courses are filled. Students must have their preferences in order by the 4pm on the 20th December 2019

  38. SEAS and Scholarships

  39. Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) • SEAS is the special consideration program used by most institutions • Filling out a single SEAS application will cover all of your eligible preferences • Primarily for students who have suffered long-term disadvantage • Except: Category 1 (Personal Information and Location) – everyone should apply • SEAS allows selection officers at institutions to grant special consideration for course entry to applicants.

What can SEAS do? • SEAS does not exempt you from completing essential requirements and compulsory admission criteria. • You must study course prerequisites, attend all interviews, sit any required tests, and submit all required folios and forms. • SEAS is not a guaranteed entry scheme or reserved quota, but may allow you to gain entry to a course with a lower ATAR than otherwise

  42. The SEAS process • Uploaded documentation is checked for legibility and approved. Applicant notified if uploaded documentation is rejected. • Hardcopy documents, uploaded documents, and online statements of support are all attached to the SEAS application.

The SEAS process • Each participating institution has the choice to use the impact grading supplied by the VTAC panel, or to have their own Access and Equity panel assess applications separately. • The details of how an individual application has been assessed, and the amount of special consideration applied are kept confidential to protect the integrity of the process. • All SEAS documents are held in the strictest confidence, and information provided can only ever be used to advantage an application.

  46. Category 1 – Personal Information and Location • Category 1 includes: • Age • Gender • Living or school location • Recognition as an Indigenous Australian • Under-represented schools • Non-English speaking background • First in family to attend university • Consideration for circumstances based on information applicants have already provided (no documentation needed). • Applying for Category 1 is as simple as giving permission and answering a simple question. • Allapplicants should apply for this category.

Category 2 – Disadvantaged financial background • Education impacted by disadvantaged financial background, for example: • Individual or family poverty • Excessive financial obligations • Economic hardship • Not limited to applicants in receipt of Centrelink benefits. • Applicants who are not in receipt of Centrelink benefits must submit an impact statement and a statement of support • Veterans’ Benefits made more prominent this year (no electronic confirmation available)

Category 3 – Disability or medical condition • Educational disadvantage as a result of a disability or medical condition experienced by the applicant. • Must provide an impact statement and a statement of support from a health practitioner that details the condition, its duration and impact. • Important to start making appointments early to ensure statements of support are ready before the closing date.
