  12. Ethical Implications of Conjoined Twins Specifically Separation

  13. Questions Big/Common Question: Should the parents decide or should they wait until the twins are old enough to decide for themselves? Another big one: One twin surviving to grow up normal VS. Both growing up together as conjoined twins

  14. What many people think Each case is looked at individually. In less extreme cases, twins should grow up to be old enough to decide separation for themselves. In most cases, severe medical concerns force parents to decide early on.

  15. Case: Bijani Twins Iranian, 29 year old conjoined twins at the skull. Underwent separation surgery under the care of 30 international professionals. Women were fully aware of risk and chance of survival (50%). Surgery was unsuccessful.

  16. Criticism Some say that the surgery should never have been attempted or that they were too optimistic. Others say it was just bad luck and just an uncontrollable, unfortunate outcome. Which would you say?

  17. Political Aspect Abby and Brittany • Choose to keep their life private • Refuse to: Answer any questions on reproductive system Have any tests done to avoid becoming a test subject

  18. Separation of Conjoined Twins Is it lawful to separate conjoined twins if it will save one child but be fatal to the other? Example Case: British Infants Jodie and Mary

  19. Mary and Jodie: Are a set of conjoined twins that share a fused spine and if the did not have a surgery to separate them they would both die. Mary has a flaccid heart, no working lungs and an underdeveloped brain. Thus she is being kept alive by Jodie’s heart and lungs.

  20. Controversial Questions Whose best interest is the surgery in? Is having a surgery knowing it would kill one twin considered murder?

  21. The Majority’s Answer 1. The act is needed to avoid inevitable and irreparable evil 2. No more should be done than is reasonably necessary for the purpose to be achieved 3. The evil inflicted must not be disproportionate to the evil avoided.
