Repo Men • “For a price, any organ in your body can be replaced. But it can also be repossessed.” • Set in the near future when artificial organs can be bought on credit, it revolves around a man who struggles to make the payments on a heart he has purchased. He must therefore go on the run before said ticker is repossessed.
Repo Men – The Game • Wired, Universal Pictures, and Lone Shark Games launched an alternate reality game combined with a manhunt • 4 contestants (runners) who are all real people applied to Lone Shark Games, the outfit running the contest • If a ‘hunter’ who has registered as a ‘repo man’ approaches them and says, “you’ve been repo’d”, the hunter wins $7,500. If the contestants go a month without being found they win $7,500. • Anybody can sign up to be a Repo-Man but they must register online.
Runner Tasks • The goal of the tasks is to give hunters who have figured out the location of runners a genuine chance to catch them. • All sorts of clues are scattered. For example, people have found clues in the March issue of Wired, and in a code that connects to a story about Wired Repo Men in Sunday’s New York Times • Each day tasks the runners have to complete are announced online
Relation to Class • Form of viral advertising – Uses Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. • Use Wired magazine and The New York Times to publish clues • Chance to win $30,000 is good incentive to get people involved with the game and aware of the movie
Relevance • How many have heard of the game? • Would you actually participate? • What type of person would be interested in this type of contest? • Is this the most effective way to target the desired market?
