International Criteria and Indicators (C&I) • Nine regional/international processes • Involve some 150 countries • Common understanding of sustainability • Tools to measure sustainability • Common rules, while recognizing differences • International meetings/workshops • ISCI, Helsinki, Aug/96 • CICI, Guatemala, Feb/03 • ECCI, Cebu City, Mar/04 • IPF/IFF/UNFF

MP Reporting Schedule/Milestones • Jun/94 – Working Group formed • Feb/95 – Santiago Declaration • Feb/97 – Progress Report • Oct/97 - First Approximation Report • Dec/99 – Forests for the Future + Santiago Declaration, 2nd edition • Apr/00 – Year 2000 Progress Report • Nov/00 – Technical Notes • Jan/01 – Scaling National C&I to Local Level • Sep/03 – First Montréal Process Forest Overview Report • June/05 - Feb/06 – revision of MP indicators

  6. Current MP Action • MPWG to hold side event at UNFF-5 (May/05) • MPWG to co-host meeting with MCPFE/ITTO to explore possibilities for common definitions and protocols common to C&I processes (Sep-Oct/05) • MPWG review of its indicators of SFM (June/05-Feb/06)

  7. MP TAC Indicator Review Timeline • June 2005 – TAC receives suggestions for international expert involvement in review. • Aug 2005 – each MP country submits their suggestions of indicators that require review to TAC. • Aug 2005 – TAC proposes list of international experts to MPWG for invitation to participate in TAC meetings.

MP TAC Indicator Review Timeline • Aug 2005 – TAC convenor sollicites comments from international bodies to add into review process. • Sept – Nov 2005: - TAC integrates cross reference to other C&I processes into its indicator review. - TAC expert meeting(s) to agree on recommendations for indicator revision. - TAC reviews outcome against other C&I.

  9. MP TAC Indicator Review Timeline • Nov – Feb 2006 – TAC solicites feedback from member countries and expert participants. • Feb 2006 – TAC submits revised indicators to MP Working Group. • Feb – June 2006 – TAC contributes to publication of new MP C&I.

  10. Opportunities for expert involvement in MP indicator review • MP TAC seeking involvement of international experts/organizations to: • Provide written comments – Aug/05 & Nov/05 to Jan/06. • Volunteer expert participation with TAC at indicator review meeting(s) Oct to Nov/05. Please Note: Organizations &/or experts interested to participate are asked to contact either the TAC convenor directly or the MP Liason office by June 2005.
