BEGINNINGS OF MUSIC Ancient History
The world has always been filled with sound.
BEGINNINGS OF SOUND • Primitive peoples were surrounded by the many sounds of nature: the scream of an animal, the roar of a waterfall, the gurgle of a brook, or the whistle of the wind.
BEGINNINGS OF SOUND • Many of the early sounds caused fear in the listener. The growl of an unknown animal or a violent crack of thunder was frightening.
Animals, also, could be frightened by sound. People soon found that by banging sticks and stones together, animals could be scared away.
Victory Songs When the enemy fled, these sounds would rise to shouts of joyous celebration. The noise of celebration was one of the first types of music ever made.
ANCIENT GREEK MUSIC • Pan was the god of shepherds and sheep. The story tells of his pursuit of a beautiful nymph, Syrinx.
ANCIENT GREEK MUSIC • When the Ladon River blocked her path and she was trapped, a protecting god transformed her into a reed. From this reed Pan made the first musical instrument - the panpipe.
