Marriage in America (Part 3): The Medical Problems Romans 1:18-27
The Wrath of God • 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.
The Evidence of God • 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
The Sentence of God • 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
The Penalty of God • 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. (Romans 1:18-27)
The Penalty of God • “Paul first refers to the degradation of females among the heathen, because they are always the last to be affected in the decay of morals, and their corruption is therefore proof that all virtue is lost.”– Charles Hodge, Romans, p. 42
The Penalty of God • “The broader context of Paul’s rejection of homosexuality is clear: homosexuality is a dramatic sign of rebellion against God’s sovereign intention in creation and a gross perversion of God’s good and perfect plan for His created order.”– Albert Mohler, Desire and Deceit, p. 69
The Penalty of God • …and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:32)
The Penalty of God • and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. (Romans 1:27)
Reason #4: • Same-sex marriage should be opposed because homosexuality so inverts God’s design it leads to physical, mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual ruin.
Mental Health • “Recent studies show homosexuals have a substantially greater risk of suffering from a psychiatric problems than do heterosexuals. We see higher rates of suicide, depression, bulimia, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse.”– Dr. Neil Whitehead, Homosexuality and Mental Health Problems, http://www.narth.com/docs/whitehead.html
Mental Health • Homosexuality is “…associated with increasing rates of depression, anxiety, illicit drug dependence, suicidal thoughts and attempts. Gay males have mental health problems five times higher than young heterosexual males. Lesbians have mental health problems nearly twice those of exclusively heterosexual females.”– 365Gay.com
Mental Health • “LGB [lesbian, gay, bisexual] people are at higher risk of mental disorder, suicidal ideation, substance misuse and deliberate self harm than heterosexual people.”– Michael King, Joanna Semlyen, Sharon See Tai, Helen Killaspy, David Osborn, Dmitri Popelyuk and Irwin Nazareth, “A systematic review of mental disorder, suicide, and deliberate self harm in lesbian, gay and bisexual people,” BMC Psychiatry 2008, 8:70 (August 18, 2008)
Mental Health • “These studies contain arguably the best published data on the association between homosexuality and psychopathology, and both converge on the same unhappy conclusion: homosexual people are at substantially higher risk for some forms of emotional problems, including suicidality, major depression, and anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, and nicotine dependence...”– Bailey, J.M. (1999): Commentary: Homosexuality and mental illness. Archives of General Psychiatry.Vol. 56, 876-880.
Mental Health • In the Netherlands, there was:“a higher prevalence of substance use disorders in homosexual women and a higher prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders in homosexual men.”– Theo G. M. Sandfort, Ron de Graaf, Rob V. Bijl, Paul Schnabel, “Same-Sex Sexual Behavior and Psychiatric Disorders: Findings From the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS),” Archives of General Psychiatry 58 (January 2001), pp. 88-89.
Mental Health • Dr. Whitehead, “Next, we ask--do the papers show that it is gay lifestyle factors, or society’s stigmatization, that are the motivators that lead a person to attempt suicide? Neither conclusion is inevitable. Still, Saghir and Robins [in their book Male and Female Homosexuality, A Comprehensive Investigation] examined reasons for suicide attempts among homosexuals and found about 2/3 were due to breakups of relationships – not outside pressures from society.”– See Saghir, M.T.; Robins, E. (1973): Male and Female Homosexuality, A Comprehensive Investigation. Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore Maryland.
Mental Health • Dr. Whitehead wrote, “Another good comparison country is New Zealand, which is much more tolerant of homosexuality than is the United States. Legislation giving the movement special legal rights is powerful, consistently enforced throughout the country, and virtually never challenged. Despite this broad level of social tolerance, suicide attempts were common in a New Zealand study and occurred at about the same rate as in the U.S….
Mental Health • …In his cross-cultural comparison of mental health in the Netherlands, Denmark and the U.S., Michael Ross, writing in The Journal of Homosexuality, in a study entitled “Homosexuality and mental health: a cross-cultural review,” could find no significant differences between countries - i.e. the greater social stigma in the United States did not result in a higher level of psychiatric problems.”– Dr. Neil Whitehead, Homosexuality and Mental Health Problems, http://www.narth.com/docs/whitehead.html
Mental Health Compared to heterosexual men, males who engage in homosexual behavior are: • • 727 percent more likely to have suffered bipolar disorders at some point in their lives • • 718 percent more likely to have suffered obsessive-compulsive disorder in the last twelve months • • 270 percent more likely to have suffered two or more psychiatric disorders during their lifetime. • • 235 percent more likely to have suffered major depression at some point in their lives.
Mental Health Compared to heterosexual women, females who engage in homosexual behavior are: • • 405 percent more likely to have suffered a substance use disorder. • • 241 percent more likely to have suffered mood disorders during their lifetimes. • • 209 percent more likely to have suffered two or more mental disorders during their lifetimes. – Theo G. M. Sandfort, Ron de Graaf, Rob V. Bijl, Paul Schnabel, “Same-Sex Sexual Behavior and Psychiatric Disorders: Findings From the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS),” Archives of General Psychiatry, Vol. 58, No. 1, January 2001, pp. 88-89.
Mental Health • The life expectancy for gay and bisexual men is 20 years less than the average Canadian man; • GLB people commit suicide at rates ranging from twice as often to almost 14 times more than the general population; • GLBs have smoking rates up to 3 times higher than average; • GLBs become alcoholics at a rate up to 7 times higher than the general population; • GLBs use illicit drugs at a rate up to 19 times higher than other Canadians;
Mental Health • GLBs experience verbal and physical abuse (from fellow GLBs) at a greater rate than most Canadians.– Canadian Rainbow Health Coalition
Drug and Alcohol Abuse • Lesbians are three times more likely to abuse alcohol and to suffer from other compulsive behaviors46% of lesbians classified themselves as heavy drinkers with frequent drunkenness. – Joanne Hall, “Lesbians Recovering from Alcoholic Problems: An Ethnographic Study of Health Care Expectations,” Nursing Research Vol. 43 (1994): 238-244.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse • “Among men, by far the most important risk group consisted of homosexual and bisexual men, who were more than nine times as likely as heterosexual men to have a history of problem drinking.” – Karen Paige Erickson, Karen F. Trocki, “Sex, Alcohol and Sexually Transmitted Diseases: A National Survey,” Family Planning Perspectives 26 (December 1994): 261.
Diseases / Promiscuity • 43% of white male homosexuals had sex with 500 or more partners, and 28% had 1,000 or more sex partners (1/2 were strangers for 79% of the 28%)– A. P. Bell and M. S. Weinberg, Homosexualities: A Study of Diversity Among Men and Women(New York: Simon and Schuster, 1978), pp. 308
Diseases / Promiscuity • 21.6 percent of those surveyed had 100 to 500 sex partners– Paul Van de Ven et al., “A Comparative Demographic and Sexual Profile of Older Homosexually Active Men,” Journal of Sex Research 34 (1997): 354.
Diseases / Promiscuity • “Few homosexual relationships last longer than two years, with many men reporting hundreds of partners throughout their lives.” – M. Pollak, “Male Homosexuality,” in Western Sexuality: Practice and Precept in Past and Present Times, edited by P. Aries and A. Bejin, pp. 40-61
Diseases / Promiscuity • “Activists have created a new word to replace the outmoded terms infidelity, adultery, cheating and promiscuity. The new concept is polyamorous. It means the same thing (literally “many loves”) but with the agreement of the primary sexual partner. Why not? He or she is probably polyamorous, too.”– James Dobson, Marriage Under Fire
Diseases / Promiscuity • “…throuplehood is more or less a permanent domestic arrangement. The three men work together, raise dogs together, sleep together, miss one another…and, in general, exemplify a modern, adult relationship. Except that there are three of them.”– Molly Young, “He & He & He,” New York Magazine, July 29, 2012, http://nymag.com/news/features/sex/2012/benny-morecock-throuple/
Diseases / Promiscuity • “‘With straight people, it’s called affairs or cheating,’ said Colleen Hoff, the study’s principal investigator, ‘but with gay people it does not have such negative connotations.’”– Scott James, “Many Successful Gay Marriages Share an Open Secret,” The New York Times, January 28, 2010, http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/us/29sfmetro.html
Diseases / Promiscuity • “For these men the term ‘monogamy’ simply doesn’t necessarily mean sexual exclusivity…The term ‘open relationship’ has for a great many gay men come to have one specific definition: a relationship in which the partners have sex on the outside often…discuss their outside sex with each other, or share sex partners.”– Michelangelo Signorile, Life Outside, p. 213
Diseases / Promiscuity • “96% of homosexuals incorporated outside sexual activity into their relationships, though most lasted under 5 years.”– David P. McWhirter and Andrew M. Mattison, The Male Couple: How Relationships Develop. (Inglewood Cliffs: Prentice-Hall, 1984), 252-53
Diseases / Promiscuity • Homosexuals acquire syphilis at a rate 10 times higher than heterosexuals– C. M. Hutchinson et al., “Characteristics of Patients with Syphilis Attending Baltimore STD Clinics,” Archives of Internal Medicine Vol. 151 (1991): 511-516.
Diseases / Promiscuity • “Homosexual men are at significantly increased risk of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, anal cancer, gonorrhea and gastrointestinal infections as a result of their sexual practices. Women who have sex with women are at significantly increased risk of bacterial vaginosis, breast cancer and ovarian cancer than are heterosexual women.”– “Health Implications Associated with Homosexuality,” A Monograph by The Medical Institute for Sexual Health, 1999.
Diseases / Promiscuity • “Behavioral research also demonstrates that a woman’s sexual identity is not an accurate predictor of behavior, with a large proportion of ‘lesbian’ women reporting sex with (often high risk) men.”– Katherine Fethers et al., “Sexually Transmitted Infections and Risk Behaviors in Women Who Have Sex with Women,” Sexually Transmitted Infections Vol. 76 (2000): 348.
Diseases / Promiscuity • “The median number of lifetime male sexual partners was significantly greater for lesbians than heterosexual women (twelve partners versus six). Lesbians were significantly more likely to report more than fifty lifetime male sexual partners.”– Katherine Fethers et al., “Sexually Transmitted Infections and Risk Behaviors in Women Who Have Sex with Women,” Sexually Transmitted Infections Vol. 76 (2000): 347.
Diseases / Promiscuity • THE RED CROSS (and FDA):“Who cannot be a blood donor?”Disqualification No. 7: “If you are a male, and have had sex even once with another male”
Diseases / Promiscuity • The source for 77% of all transmission of HIV among whites is homosexual males– Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (December 23, 2004): 1108
Diseases / Promiscuity • Matt Foreman, the executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force: • “With 70% of the people in the country living with HIV being gay or bisexual, we cannot deny that HIV is a gay disease. We have to own up to that.”
Physical Abuse • 90 percent of the lesbians surveyed had been recipients of one or more acts of verbal aggression from their female partners during the year prior, with 31 percent reporting one or more incidents of physical abuse– Lettie L. Lockhart et al., “Letting out the Secret: Violence in Lesbian Relationships,” Journal of Interpersonal Violence 9 (December 1994): 469-492.
Physical Abuse • “…slightly more than half of the [lesbians] reported that they had been abused by a female lover/partner. The most frequently indicated forms of abuse were verbal/emotional/psychological abuse and combined physical-psychological abuse.”– Gwat Yong Lie and Sabrina Gentlewarrier, “Intimate Violence in Lesbian Relationships: Discussion of Survey Findings and Practice Implications,” Journal of Social Service Research Vol.15 (1991): 41-59.
Physical Abuse • Married women in traditional families experience the lowest rate of violence compared with women in other types of relationships.– Bureau of Justice Statistics
Physical Abuse • “The incidence of domestic violence among gay men is nearly double that in the heterosexual population.”– David Island and Patrick Letellier, Men Who Beat the Men Who Love Them: Battered Gay Men and Domestic Violence (New York: Haworth Press, 1991), p. 14.
Suicide • Suicide attempts among homosexuals were six times greater than the average among heterosexuals– Remafedi, G.; French, S.; Story, M.; Resnick, M.D.; Blum, R. (1998): The relationship between suicide risk and sexual orientation: Results of a population-based study. American Journal of Public Health 88, 57-60.– R. Herrell, et al., “A Co-Twin Study in Adult Men,” Archives of General Psychiatry 56 (1999): 867-874.
Life Expectancy • “In a major Canadian centre, life expectancy at age 20 years for gay and bisexual men is 8 to 20 years less than for all men. If the same pattern of mortality were to continue, we estimate that nearly half of gay and bisexual men currently aged 20 years will not reach their 65th birthday. Under even the most liberal assumptions, gay and bisexual men in this urban centre are now experiencing a life expectancy similar to that experienced by all men in Canada in the year 1871.” – R. S. Hogg, et. al., “Modelling the impact of HIV disease on mortality in gay and bisexual men,” International Journal of Epidemiology, Vol. 26, 657-661, 1997.
Life Expectancy • Dr. Paul Cameron:“Studies have shown that years of smoking shortens the lifespan of the smoker from 1 to 7 years. Recent analysis of the age of death in Norway and Denmark for gays who are legally married suggests that engaging in homosexual behavior reduces lifespan by 24 years! What justification is there for condemning smoking and endorsing homosexuality? Today, all across the Western world, school children are being taught the acceptability of homosexuality and the wrongness of smoking.”
Life Expectancy • “Given the greatly reduced lifespan for homosexuals, school children should be strongly and consistently warned about the dangers of homosexuality even more so than smoking. Those school districts which are introducing pro-gay curricula need to rethink their priorities.”– “Federal Distortion Of Homosexual Footprint (Ignoring Early Gay Death?)”, Eastern Psychological Association Conference,
Life Expectancy • The median age of death for gay men and women without AIDS is in the early 40s– Paul Cameron, William Playfair, and Stephen Wellum, “The Longevity of Homosexuals: Before and After the AIDS Epidemic,” Omega Journal of Death and Dying 29, 3 (1994): 249–72
Life Expectancy • “Bluntly, then, core gay behavior is both potentially fatal to others, and often suicidal. Surely it should be considered ‘mentally disturbed’ to risk losing one’s life for sexual liberation. This is surely among the most extreme risks practiced by any significant fraction of society. I have not found a higher risk of death accepted by any similar-sized population.”– Dr. Neil Whitehead, Homosexuality and Mental Health Problems
