God’s Greatest Creation: Marriage Matthew 19:4-6, “And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who madethem at the beginning 'made them male and female,‘ and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (NKJV) Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
God’s Greatest Creation: Relationship God created men and women for each other in the context of the Committed Marriage relationship to, • Dispel Aloneness • Provide loving Companionship • Create Healthy Family Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
1. Dispel Aloneness Genesis 2:15 & 18, “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. .. And the Lord God said, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.“ (NKJV) Ezer – More than just a Helper. It suggests “A Strong Rescuer equal to the man.” Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
1. Dispel Aloneness The woman is more than a helper waiting on her husband. She is a “powerful,” loving companion corresponding to him. She is her husband’s equal in important ways, having been built by God Himself to make the man complete in their mutual marital relationship before God. Now, the man is no longer lonely because he is with his wife as her husband. Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
1. Dispelling Aloneness God’s Greatest Creation looks something like this, Jesus is Lord! Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
2. Provide Loving Companionship The result of this divine union of the man and the woman as husband and wife results in loving companionship. Notice what the Lord says, "Have you not read that He who madethem at the beginning 'made them male and female, …“ (NKJV) No other union, male & male or female & female, are blessed by God. Such unions violate God’s purpose of creating family, are counter to the laws of nature and are sinful. God says, Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
2. Provide Loving Companionship ”'For this reasona man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, .. “ “For this reason” – Genesis 2:23 says, “And Adam said: This [one] is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” (NKJV) The man is profoundly attracted to the woman built from his own flesh and it defines their relationship. This heterosexual attraction is of divine origin and is mutual. This attraction is good thing but it can be abused outside of the context of marriage. Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
2. Provide Loving Companionship ”'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, .. “ The ideas of “leave” and “be joined” (cleave KJV) are significant. The man (and his wife) leave their family of origin to create a new family unit. This is a natural process that focuses on the powerful and intimate relationship of marriage. It suggests a “reaching out to each other” in loving affection to consummate the marriage union as husband and wife. Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
3. Create Healthy Family “and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.“ • “Becoming one flesh” is a profound mystery. It suggests a close, intimate relationship like no other. • I, me and mine become we, us and ours. • The couple become life-long companions under the Lordship of Jesus Christ (Christian couples) while they struggle with the brokenness of sin. Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
3. Create Healthy Family Genesis 3 tells the story of how sin entered into the marriage relationship. Because the couple was disobedient to God in the exercise of their freewill, they become antagonistic toward each other in a competitive, hierarchical relationship where both would seek to be in charge. This is the source of much brokenness in marriage today. In Genesis 3:16b God punishes (not curse) the woman saying, “Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
3. Create Healthy Family The word tesugah (translated here “desire”) in reality refers to the woman’s turning away from God in disobedience. She chose to eat of the forbidden fruit and give some to her husband who ate also. So, the woman turned away from God to her husband with unpleasant results, “.., andhe shall rule over you.” This marital reality as torn by sin isnot a permanent fixture of marriage. Remember, this passage deals with the marital consequences of sin and God’s curse on the serpent and creation. In this sin-torn relationship, God’s blessing of becoming one flesh becomes an impossibility. Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
3. Create Healthy Family But God has the cure for this predicament and His name Jesus. A Messianic prophesy appears at the end in Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you (serpent) and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."(NKJV) Hope in the midst of Brokenness - Praise God! Scriptural Prayer for Families Ephesians 3:14-21, “For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height — to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.(NKJV) Dr. Doc R. Williams - 2009 @
