* * Mother provides cholesterol for placenta, placenta converts to Progesterone for Mother And fetus. P4 is converted into DHEA by fetal adrenal region, then 16 OH DHEA sulfate by Fetal liver. Then 16-OH is converted into estriol (the major estrogen produced by The placenta) • HPL (human placental lactogen) assists by increasing mother’s levels of circulating sugar for additional energy for fetus. HPL blocks effects of insulin, making mom insulin resistant. She produces more insulin, more sugar is made available to fetus. However, too much sugar in blood can lead to Gestational diabetes for mom and increased sugar storage (as glycogen) for baby, increasing baby size (macrosomia).
