The Vikings • The Vikings were descended from a tribe of people who moved to Scandinavia about 4000 years ago. Scandinavia is made up of the three countries ~ Norway , Sweden and Denmark. • The Vikings spoke a common language called the “Donsk Tunga “ .The name Viking probably came from the old Scandinavian saying to go a Viking which meant to go raiding as a warrior or pirate. • The Vikings were also known as the Norsemen,Northmen & Danes.
Vikings were divided into small communities each of which was ruled over by a king . The king,together with other Viking nobles and war leaders,formed the most important group of people in their community. They were wealthy because they owned large areas of land.They were also very powerful. The Viking council. This Viking council passed laws ,arranged taxes and held trials to judge law breakers.It also decided whether the community should go to war or not.A thing usually met once or twice a year. Family • The law allowed Viking men to have many wives • Wealthy men often had a large family with each of their many wives. • This caused the numbers of Vikings in Scandinavia to increase very rapidly. Then there were more Vikings.
They came from …… • The Vikings came from Scandinavia but as they travelled some would settle elsewhere • The Vikings settled in countries including Britain and Ireland.
Viking boats • The Vikings made very well crafted boats called longboats . • One longboat was the Oseberg. The Oseberg carried the bodies of a princess and her slave as well as many of the princess’ possessions.
