Viking Origins • From Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) • Vikingr=men from Viken, on Skagerrak • Also called Norsemen or Normans • Mostly fishers & farmers
Viking Age • 800 AD to 1100 AD • Vikings began raiding other areas • Causes not certain • Historians suggest push/pull combination • Lack of land at home (push) • Easily taken wealth elsewhere
Fjords: Home of the Vikings • Vikings lived at the ends of Fjords: long, narrow, salt water inlets with high cliffs along sides • contain limited amounts of fertile land • Population growth in 700s put pressure on land
Viking Raids • Late 700s Vikings started to attack coastal areas around Europe • Took wealth or accepted money in exchange for not attacking
Had reputation as being mercilessly destructive • killed or enslaved every man, woman and child that they found
LONGSHIPS • Made quick raids on coastal communities using longships • almost 25 meters long, 2 meters deep, and could carry a crew of 32 people • sailed into water just over 1 meter deep
Viking Colonies • Began settling where they raided • Settled in Normandy in France • Invaded England and stayed
Viking Colonies (Cont.) • Colonized Iceland & Greenland • Next went to Vinland (Newfoundland) • Had violent fights with indigenous population • Made colony at L’Anse aux Meadows for short time
Historical stories called sagas tell story of voyages of Leif Erikson and others to Vinland • Thorfinn Karlsefni brought settlers to another colony (possibly L’Anse aux Meadows) • Freydis Eriksdottir led failed settlement in 1014 • Eventually even Greenland colony failed • Failed to adapt culture to surroundings
