  3. ARTHROPODA • Greek for “jointed foot” • More ARTHROPODS than any other living animal!!

  4. GENERAL INFO • Freshwater • 4 pairs of walking legs • Swimmerets located ventrally on abdomen • Cephalothorax • Carapace-shield covering cephalothorax • Uropod and Telson on tail (movement)

  5. EXOSKELETON • Composed of chitin and proteins • 3 layers • Secreted by the epidermis • Shed exoskeleton by molting • Must do this to grow • Also called ECDYSIS • Hormones release the exoskeleton • Nature recycles

  6. EXCRETORY • Green glands remove waste from the blood • Recycles urine before it leaves the body • liquid waste is voided at the base of the antenna

  7. RESPIRATORY • Gills attached to walking legs • As the animal walks, water moves over the gills • O2 is extracted from the water

  8. NERVOUS • Brain • Ventral nerve cord • Compound eyes on stalks • 2 sets of antenna (used for balance, hearing, touch, taste, smell) • Statocyst (function??) • Regeneration

  9. REPRODUCTION • Male transfers sperm in the fall • Sperm is stored on the abdomen of the female in seminal receptacles until spring • In spring, female lays eggs and they are fertilized • Eggs attach to swimmerets of mother • Hatch in 6 weeks • EXTERNAL, SEXUAL

  10. CIRCULATORY SYSTEM • Open system • Lacks pressure • May not deliver blood to all needed areas • Heart in dorsal position above stomach • Heart in pericardial cavity • 3 ostia on the sides of the heart

  12. ARTERIES THAT LEAVE HEART • 1 opthamalic artery (eyes) • 2 Antennary arteries • 2 Hepatic Arteries(excretory) • 1 Dorsal Abdominal Arteries • 1 sternal artery
