How does a debate work ? • Key players : debaters, adjudicators, time keeper, chair person • Key aspects : motions, definition, theme line, team split, argument, rebuttals
Parliamentary English Debate • It is adopted from Parliament’s regular activity in Western Country • There are 4 systems of English Debate : - British Parliamentary - Asian Parliamentary - Australian Parliamentary - World Schools System
Motion • Full proportional statements that determine what a debate shall be about • In a debate, the affirmative must argue to defend the motion • Example : This House believe that Iran should stop its nuclear enrichment
Definition • Clear description of boundaries of the motion, limiting what the debate will be about in a focused area of discussion • Example : This House would legalize Abortion : Government of Indonesia would make abortion for unwanted pregnancies protected by law
Team Split • The distribution of arguments between 1st speaker and 2nd speaker • Be careful not to make a hung case
Rebuttal • A process of tackling the opposing team’s arguments • It may consist of : - showing that opposition argument is : illogical, irrelevant and contradictive to one another
Argumentation • A process explaining what point of view that support/against the motion • One argument consist of AREL : A = Assertion R = Reasoning E = Evidence L = Link Back
How to be a great debater ? • Practice • Practice more • Keep practicing • Read a lot • Don’t be afraid to try • Maintain your self esteem
