    4. AE in Africa Our scope: all cities/towns of Africa Current indigenous African offices We have 10 national teams in Africa and 8 national support groups outside of Africa. We have 10 national teams in Africa and 8 national support groups outside of Africa.

The AE Partnership An holistic approach: our 4 core competencies We regard ourselves as servants of the Church and as a strategic source of encouragement, equipping and enabling the Church to be effective in its tasks of: * Helping to complete the Great Commission in urban Africa * Developing Christian Leaders in every strata of urban society * Taking responsibility for the Ministry and Message of Reconciliation Helping to motivate, mobilize and model the practical caring ministries among the most needy of urban Africa. It is in this latter area that we will be sharing today……………………..We regard ourselves as servants of the Church and as a strategic source of encouragement, equipping and enabling the Church to be effective in its tasks of: * Helping to complete the Great Commission in urban Africa * Developing Christian Leaders in every strata of urban society * Taking responsibility for the Ministry and Message of Reconciliation Helping to motivate, mobilize and model the practical caring ministries among the most needy of urban Africa. It is in this latter area that we will be sharing today……………………..

    8. The 3 R’s For Building Nations

Repentance, Reconciliation, Restitution = the 3 R’s that Build Nations Confess sins (personal, national) Ask for and offer Forgiveness Agree to remove or bear causes of conflict Return & restore what was wrongfully taken Remove structures of injustice Continue as God’s agents of reconciliation

    10. 1948 – 1989 “Apartheid” the Rule of a Racist Regime Total discrimination against people of color. Segregation of housing, schools, hospitals, jobs, transport, toilets, building entrances, restaurants, hotels, theatres, park benches, beaches etc. No right to vote, to organize political groups or labor, to marry other races, to protest in public, to live permanently in urban areas, to own land in ‘white areas’, to stay in white areas longer than 72 hours, to be without a state pass-book at any time.

    11. South Africa September 1989 to Feb.1990 Sept.’89 – whites only racist national elections. Peaceful protesters shot, jailed & killed. Army, police and state security agents in charge. All media controlled by government. Black leaders banned, detained, imprisoned, tortured and assassinated. Internal revolution grows more violent. Civil War seems inevitable – world media arrives.

    12. The Mandela Moment Feb 2, 1990 SA President announces Mandela’s release All banned political groups free to operate The national state of emergency ended Feb 11 Mandela released after 27 years in prison Mandela spends first night at home of + Desmond Tutu

    13. In March 1990 I met Mandela at his first public rally in Natal

    14. The Church Leads The Way Building on the 1985 National Initiative for Reconciliation (NIR) The ERA for a new South African era Evangelism, Reconciliation, Action = ERA “The power of one” grips everyone All Christian leaders gather

    15. The Rustenburg Christian Leadership Conference 1990 Everyone came – a first in 30 years The unending opening changed everything Apology becomes contagious A Declaration that paved the way:

    16. “From Africa With Love” August 1992 African Christian leaders from outside of South Africa meet with SA political leaders to promote reconciliation and justice through dialogue & negotiation

    17. Dec. 1992 - Jan. 1994 Dialogue Weekends with politicians who were writing the new SA constitution

    18. A Two – Year, 24/7 Prayer-Chain established world-wide by AE for SA political leaders

    19. First Democratic Elections set for April 27-29, 1994.

    20. November 1993 -Christians write the Preamble to the New SA Constitution and successfully negotiate it with Marxists and pagan politicians: “In humble submission to Almighty God, we the people of South Africa declare……..”

    21. Violence increases between political parties. 10 million Zulu’s threaten civil war and refuse to join election process.

    22. March 27 & April 5, 1994 AE Brings Dr. Okumu from Kenya to help mediate agreement between Mandela, DeKlerk and Buthelezi (Zulu Leader)

    23. Mandela (+ Buthelezi & De Klerk) requests Okumu to be ‘official advisor’ to the Kissinger-Carrington mediation team.

    24. April 12,13 1994 Dr. Henry Kissinger (USA) and Lord Carrington (UK) come to SA in last-ditch attempt to mediate and negotiate agreement between Mandela, Buthelezi (Zulu leader) and President De Klerk.

    25. April 14 Mediation Fails. Carrington & Kissinger depart predicting violent & cataclysmic consequences for SA. Okumu agrees to AE request and stays!

    26. April 14 – 17 Okumu comes up with “The Plan.” The Key is the Zulu King : Goodwill Zwelithini

    27. Jesus Peace Rally April 17: 30,000 at the “Jesus Peace Rally” held in Kings Park Stadium in Durban. Buthelezi shows Okumu Plan to Mandela’s & DeKlerk’s people

    28. April 18 & 19 agreement to Okumu plan reached between Mandela, Zulu leader Buthelezi & President De Klerk.

    29. April 19 – On 1pm national news De Klerk addresses the nation together with Mandela and Buthelezi. ZULU’s to join elections

    30. Just 8 days before the elections this agreement, negotiated by God’s appointed reconciler and covered by the prayers of millions, prevented a certain civil war that was likely to be five times worse than the genocide in Rwanda.

    31. April 27-30 1994 - The Most Peaceful Transition to Democracy in Africa is proclaimed around the World as A MIRACLE!

    32. President Mandela asks Church Leaders to lead the South African TRUTH & RECONCILIATION COMMISSION

    33. Reconciliation & Restitution continues… Other Nations adopt many of South Africa’s Reconciliation principles and processes.

    34. In South Africa we came, through painful and costly years of White fear and Black anger to understand that Christian Reconciliation is possible…

    35. Because God Reconciled us to Himself through the total sacrifice of His Son on the Cross. He restored us to fellowship with Himself and with each other and gave us the Message and the Ministry of Reconciliation………
