OUR EXTENSION NEEDS • Group approach to extension • No. of farmer households in the country (1995-96) 1156 lakh • No. of farmer groups per Block ~ 1000 (Average 20 farmers in one Group) • HUGE EXTENSION NEEDS • State extension staff to work only on extension activities. • Multi-purpose service centers are needed at Block level, preferably n private sector or PPP mode. • States to actively contribute to KCC and its Knnwledge Management System. • States to use AGRISNET funds to develop content for utilizing Village Knowledge Centers.

EXTENSION REFORMS (ATMA) SCHEME • State Extension Work Plans (SEWP) for 2005-06 to be submitted asap. • Strategic Research and Extension Plan (SREP) to be completed asap. • Training of District Teams • Training of AES Teams • Training of Master Trainers • NATP – I States should submit Audit Report etc. within due date.

MASS MEDIA SCHEME • Doordarshan - 180 Narrowcasting Stations, 18 Regional Kendras and 1 transmission on DD- National channel and AIR - 96 FM Stations. • Live CROP SEMINAR. • Monthly report from ARU of DD and AIR • States to coordinate/assist in selection of farmers/villages. • Regular meetings of State/District Committees should be held to ensure content and quality of programmes. States to ensure coordination between DD / AIR and experts from Line Deptts, SAUs & KVKs. • States to ensure that District Committees submit quarterly reports to State Committees. States to provide quarterly report to DAC for Apex Committee Meeting. • How can we assist you in fulfilling your role ?

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY KVKs DURING 2004-05 • No. of KVKs at the beginning of 2004-05 329 • Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) 13803 • Training • No. of programmes21,864 • No. of participants 6,01,000 • No. of extension activities 16662 (Field days, Kisan Melas, Kisan Gosthies, Exhibitions, Ex-trainers Sammelan, Advisory Services, Film Shows, Diagonostic Services, Clinics, Farm Sciences Clubs, Organising SHGs)

HOW TO IMPROVE EFFECTIVENESS OF FLD, TRAINING & EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF KVKs - I • Criteria for selection of FLD sites should be developed by KVKs in consultation with ATMAs. • Public extension functionaries / Farmer Trainers, etc. must remain present during the visit of KVK scientists to FLD sites. • Impact assessment of FLDs should be done jointly by KVKs and ATMAs. • Feasibility to organise FLDs following Farmers’ Field Schools approach should be examined. • Necessary arrangement for block demonstrations, availability of seeds and marketing of produce should be put in place for successful upscaling of FLDs.

HOW TO IMPROVE EFFECTIVENESS OF FLD, TRAINING & EXTENSION ACTIVITIES OF KVKs - II • KVKs would give priority to training programmes and FLD related extension activities requested by ATMAs. • PD, ATMA to be made permanent invitee to SAC of KVKs • ICAR Institutions / SAUs / KVKs may consider providing Deputy PD to ATMA at least on part-time basis. • Should site selection for FLDs be done by ATMAs in consultation with KVKs? • Should Work Plan of KVKs in respect of FLD, Training & Extension activities be approved by ATMA?
