  1. Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia(EANET):Cooperation for Regional Atmospheric Pollution Investigation Sergey A. GromovAcid Deposition and Oxidant Research Center (ADORC),1182 Sowa, Niigata city, 950-2144 JAPANhttp:\\www.eanet.cc

  2. Participation in EANET (13 countries):1998 – preparatory phase, 2001 – regular phase China Indonesia Japan Malaysia Mongolia Philippines R. of Korea Russia Thailand Viet Nam Cambodia Lao PDR Myanmar

  3. Institutional Framework of EANET Intergovernmental Meeting Scientific Advisory Committee Secretariat (UNEP.RRC.AP) Network Center (ADORC) Participating Countries National Focal Point NationalCenter UNEP RRC.AP (Bangkok, Thailand) was designated as the Secretariat for EANET Acid Deposition and Oxidant Research Center (ADORC, Japan) – as Network Center

  4. EANET Activities: Monitoring Measurement sites (2005): • Wet deposition - 46 (urban, rural, remote) • Dry deposition (air concentration) -37 • Inland aquatic (surface water) – 13 (sensitive objects) • Soil and vegetation – up to 19 in total (mostly remote)

  5. Monitoring programs of EANET (for acid deposition and its effects) • Unified design of monitoring sites and measurement programs • Technical manuals and documents • Similar sampling/laboratory equipment • Central compilation and storage of data and information • Common QA/QC programs and activities Integrity of Data Acquisition and Methodologies

  6. EANET Activities: Dissemination of Information • All data and Information are disclosed (Procedures for Data and Information Disclosure was adopted in 2001) • Annual reporting of data • Joint consideration of QA/QC • Dissemination of monitoring data (by CD and through I-net) • WEB site<www.eanet.cc>updated by NC regularly with information on EANET history, general information, technical manuals, meeting documentsData reports, etc. eanet@adorc.gr.jp

  7. Results of Monitoring (2005): Deposition of nss-SO42-

  8. Comparison of inter-laboratory projects in 1998-2005(wet deposition)

  9. Cooperation on Investigation and Research(initiated by NC and countries) Joint project with Russiaon Evaluation of East Siberian Atmospheric Environment Joint project with Thailandon dry deposition flux and dry deposition (air concentration) measurement technique Joint project with Thailandon catchment analysis with monitoring on input (deposition) and output (stream water) fluxes and other biochemical aspects Joint project with Mongoliaon plant sensitivity to pollutant impact and acid deposition

  10. Collaboration on developing emission inventory and numerical modeling

  11. MICS-Asia< Model InterComparison Study in Asia > Targets in Phase II • Modeling of spatial distribution of averaged concentrations and monthly accumulated depositions - Dry dep. :SO2, HNO3, NH3, O3, aerosols of SO42-, NO3-, NH4- Wet dep. :Sulfate, Nitrate, Ammonia Emission (expert evaluations): Anthropogenic, Biomass burning, Biogenic and Volcano • Comparison with EANET monitoring data at some sites - SO2, NO, NO2, HNO3, O3, Sulfate, Nitrate, - Precipitation chemistry compounds

  12. Assessment of Environmental Data • Periodic Report on the State of Acid Deposition in East Asia (to be issued soon) • Preparing by the Scientific Advisory Committee and NC • Evaluation of EANET monitoring data for 2000-2004 • Including the view and assessments by countries • Coverage of the whole aspects of EANET activities: • History and organizational principles • Data Acquisition, Methodologies and QA/QC activities • Assessment of monitoring data on regional atmospheric pollution and deposition, ecological surveys and temporal variations • Achievement and Experiences including training and capacity building for Network operation • Prospective and Recommendations for Future Works

  13. Public Awareness and General Information • Annual Workshops for EANET countries on Public Awareness for Acid Deposition Problems • Report for Policy Makers (RPM) “Goals, Achievements and Way Forward” • The Secretariat of EANET in cooperation with NC and SAC • RPM was launched during the High Level Segment of Intergovernmental meetingand published in 2006 • Next RPM will be prepared in 2008-2009with introducing the achievements at the national level relating to acid deposition and atmospheric pollution control.

  14. EANET Activities: Public Awareness Brochures, VCD and Videotape VCD in China (in Chinese) Videotape in Japan (in Japanese and English)

  15. Future Development General Directions for Investigations 2007-2010(ref: Strategy for EANET, adopted in 2006 ) • Current EANET activities - improvement of QA/QC and data quality in all countries,- appropriate extension of Network (site distribution) - strengthening data exchange with other monitoring networks and initiatives • New directions of EANET- discussion how to initiate emission inventories as one of EANET activities- preparation to implementation of modeling activities (including capacity building and cooperation with HTAP) - expansion of monitoring on new substances
