Purpose of discussion • The purpose of this presentation is to provide you with information and tools that may assist you in managing an emergency event with a successful outcome.
Mass Shooting incidents • Events in the United States over the last 25 years • Between 1984 and 2004 (20 years) there were 18 mass killing events. • Between 2007 and 2012 (5 years) there have been 12 mass killing events. • http://www.nycrimecommission.org/initiative1-shootings.php
Why plan for an emergency? • No one knows how they will react to an emergency situation until it is occurring. However having some knowledge on ways to manage an emergency event will help set up a platform from which to draw from and keep you on track. (Being prepared minimizes the risk of encountering an emergency situation).
Communication of Emergency • Text message through YC Alert • Computer screen message (Alertus) • Loud speaker announcements • Classroom telephone • Sign in window (Columbine incident) (Injured facility need medical assistance)
Types of Emergency • Medical • Call 911 if life threatening • Call 311 or Campus Police for assistance (First Aid) • Criminal activity • Call 911 if life threatening • Call 311 or Campus Police for all others
Types of Emergency • Student misconduct • If non-violent most incidents can be handled by instructor. • Conduct can be reported to Campus Police if severe. (Major class disruption) • Conduct can also be reported via e-mail directly to director of judicial affairs (Sarah Castro) if instructor correction fails.
Emergency numbers • Campus Police • 776-2185 Direct or just extention 2185 from campus phone • 237-0420 (Officer Cell) • 311 from any campus phone • 911 (Goes to Prescott Police and Campus Police) • Emergency Blue light phone (311 or 911)
