In order to learn chemistry we need to learn to talk chemistry. Lots of words have vague meaning in “real life” but mean specific things in chemistry. Let’s see what is going on. The soon we can talk to each other, the more we will learn. That’s Demetri Mendeleev, one of my chemistry heroes. This is the man responsible for the creation of the original Periodic Table of the Elements. Let me give you one of those now. Open to the back, to the Periodic Table now. Get paper now too.
Fill in the blanks on the handout please. Answers on the next slide… What is an element? What’s so periodical about them? How many are there? What one has the funniest name?
What is an element? One of 118 known substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances (except into protons, neutrons, and electrons)What’s so periodical about them? They are arranged on this table so that their chemical and physical properties REPEAT in the up and down groups. What one has the funniest name? ??
Find this element, which we will use for our example now. 22.98977 +1 11 2-8-1 Na
Ion Charge, which we will get to later on when we start for form compounds Atomic Mass Which we round to the nearest whole number 22.98977 +1 11 2-8-1 Na Symbol, capital letters are very important! Atomic Number, all elements are numbered Electron configuration, later again, but note: 2 + 8 + 1 = 11 works every time!
On back side of the Periodic Table is table S, which lists the names of the elements. Let’s go through them in order, note the funny sounding names. We’ll do the first 40 only. H, He, Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Br, Kr, Rb, Sr, Y, and Zr. All have a capital letter symbol, or a capital letter with a small letter. NO elements have a single lower case, or two upper case letters.
The smallest amount of an element is an _____________________ When 2 or more atoms chemically bond together (like H2O or CO2) you get a ___________________________ The smallest part of that is called a ______________________________
The smallest part of an element is an atom When 2 or more atoms chemically bond together (like H2O or CO2) you get a compound The smallest part of that is called a molecule
When you mix stuff together, but it doesn’t react to form new substances, it just mixes up, that’s called a __________________________________ They can be the same throughout like salty water, or different throughout like mixing bits of metal into dry salt. These words also have to be named…
When you mix stuff together, but it doesn’t react to form new substances, it just mixes up, that’s called a Mixtures The same throughout is HOMOGENEOUS Different throughout is HETEROGENEOUS
Examples of mixtures include… HOMOGENEOUS (same) HETERGENEOUS (different)
Homework… Do APS-Chem HW#1 (handout) Bring your reference tables with you or else you will not be able to do this. I will collect it on Thursday.
