Welcome to Biology! • If you do not have a yellow schedule, please go to the main lobby to pick one up. No white schedules! • Find the seat with your name. You should be in alphabetical order by last name. • Complete the information sheet while I take attendance (Don’t let me forget to do this!) • After taking attendance, I will pass out the material from the school (first block only) and then we will get started.
Everything you ever wanted to know about… BIOLOGY CLASS
What do I need for class? • Notebook OR Binder • Pens and Pencils (EVERY. DAY.) • Calculator
What are the rules? • (Norms, not rules) • Respect • Responsibility • Hard Work
How will I be graded? • Points not percentage! (get used to fractions…) • The harder the assignment, the more it’s worth • Citizenship Grading System – Come prepared, behave, and don’t leave class.
Do you accept late work? Verified Absence? Just Forgot? A lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. Translation: Use a homework pass or take a zero. (But please come talk to me if you have an issue you can’t control.) • Check the folder for handouts when you return • Three days to get caught up. • If you knew the due date before you were out, you won’t get additional time. Plan ahead.
Is there an SOL test? • YES! It is in December • It is TEI. • Remember: You must pass 2 science SOLs to graduate! (Earth Sci, Bio, Chem, or Physics)
Textbooks and Dissections • Textbooks • Class set only • If you would like a textbook to take home, that can be arranged • Dissections • Several dissections planned for later in the semester • Alternatives will be provided for the squeamish on request
Please don’t bring… Electronics Food, Gum, or Drinks Bugs are gross Allergies are unpleasant Scraping gum off desks is gross Water is ok to have. • Except when I tell you to bring them for instructional purposes
Do we have to have a seating chart? Yes. Always. (I promise you’ll live.)
Leaving Class… During the Block End of class I dismiss you. Not the bell. • Sign in and out on the clipboard by the door • Take your agenda (replacement costs $5) • It will cost you a citizenship point (except for the nurse)
Are you going to call my parents? • I will if I have to for… • More than three zeros in a grading period • A grade lower than a C • Not returning required forms • Discipline concerns
What’s the difference… Pre-AP General Biology Hours of homework (j/k) More big picture, less details More Relaxed Pace Super fun labs • Hours of homework (j/k) • Deeper into content • Practice AP problems • Faster Pace • Super fun labs
