  1. Better Buys! Objective: Learn to make comparisons and identify which one is the better buy.

  2. Example to discuss: Alberto wants to buy flowers for his girlfriend. He goes to Montseflower shop and they charge him $42 for 2 dozen roses. He finds it expensive so he goes to Evelyn’s Flower shop and they charge him $50 dollars for 3 dozen roses. Find the unit price, then determine which option is the better buy. Steps: 1. Write the rate from the problem. 2. Find the unit rate. 3. Circle the option that is the better buy. Hint: Whichever is the cheaper of the two will be the better buy. $42 = ?   3. Your example • Use unit prices to find the better buy. • Soda: 6 bottles for $2.16 or 8 bottles for $2.96. • Cheese: $2.80 for 12 slices or $4.36 for 24 slices.

  4. Homework: Write each expression as a rate. Find the unit rate, then determine which is the better buy. • Strawberries: $2.96 for 2 baskets or $3.20 for 3 baskets. • Video game tokens: $1.00 for 5 tokens or $5 dollars for 30 tokens. • Tissue paper: $3.50 for 2 boxes or $9.00 for 5 boxes. • Blueberries: $2.22 for 2 baskets or $3.54 for 3 baskets. • Chocolates: $6.00 for 2 bags or $12 dollars for 5 bags.
