  10. Key Terminology • Common Core State Standards (CCSS) – refers to the desired qualities of student work and the degree of rigor that must be assessed and achieved. The standards do not dictate what content is covered. • Cognitive Demand – The type of information a person is asked to process at any one time (Webb’s Depth of Knowledge) • Relevance – One using their knowledge to tackle real-world problems with more than one solution. • Rigor – Rigor is creating an environment in which each student is expected to learn at high levels, each student is supported so he or she can learn at high levels, and each student demonstrates learning at high levels. • Text Complexity – Meaning, structure, etc. of a reading passage (Lexile.com) • Close Reading – Requires a substantial emphasis on readers figuring out a high quality text Rose M.   20. Affective Variables Habits of Mind: don't simply represent fragments of practice to "add on" to what you already do, but rather new ways to think about how people learn. Deliberate Practice: Experts are experts at maintaining high-levels of practice and improving performance. Academic Tenacity: about working hard, and working smart, for a long time Growth Mindset: people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.
