Communication in a new generation http://www.forbes.com/fdc/welcome_mjx.shtml
Collaborating online is… • Connecting technology to student learning • Identifying the best tool to meet the need of the project • Usability and connectedness • Building communities (CoP)
Benefits of collaborative learning… • Development of critical thinking skills • Co-creation of knowledge and meaning • Reflection • Transformative learning. (Palloff & Pratt, 2005)
Online collaboration should… • Include a sense of community • Include the student in the process and responsibility of learning • Include time for ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ time for discussion and reflection (Eriksen, 2001) • Critical thinking does not always equate action
Collaborative Digital Discussions • Platforms/tools • Discussion boards • Whiteboards • Post it notes • Protocol-based discussions (Ehrlich, Ergulec, Zydney& Angelone, 2013) • Resources • 27 free tools: http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2012/08/the-top-27-free-tools-to-collaborate.html
PBL and Collaborating Online Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying. (www.edutopia.org) …develop students' critical thinking skills, improve long-term retention of content learned, and increase students' and teachers' satisfaction with learning experiences (Ravitz, 2009) …framed around a driving question. …helps to drive change. …may be challenged by time and resources.
