What is an E-Moment? • “Engaging moment” • Strategy or activity designed to maximize learning • They enhance the ways learners can connect with your content.
What prevents teachers from using them? • The unknown • They are set in their ways • Lack of time or motivation • “That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of, my kids would NEVER go for that!”
How do you overcome those negative thoughts? • Safety First • Risk Boldly • Engage YOURSELF! • Give acknowledgement freely • Celebrate often • Set the context – refuse to limit their ability • BELIEVE!
How do they work? • Chunking • Organizing material in meaningful units • Rote Rehearsal • Repeating information or a skill many times • Elaborative Rehearsal • Immersing information in meaning or highlighting it relevance
How they work? • Pattern Recognition • Indentifying familiar patterns • Emotional Involvement • Embedding information with feelings or emotions These five strategies are used to aid learners to connect with content
Hidden around the room are index cards with E-moments on them • When I say “GO” your task is to: • Send one person to find the card that is the same color as your group color • When you find it return to your group
Group Presentations • You are going to teach your material to the group utilizing the E-moment on the card • Be sure to include: • An explanation of the E-Moment • Present the material utilizing the given E-moment • How YOU could use it
