Our Goal • Goal Statement #3: We, all instructional staff of McCulloch Academy, will improve student skills in Numbers and Operations for all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students as measured by the summative Fall 2009 MEAP Math Assessment, so that 75% of non-disabled students show proficient and advanced levels, while accelerating the performance of students with disabilities so that 65% show proficient or advanced levels. Additionally, all students in kindergarten through 5th grade will achieve a score of 70% or higher on a post assessment administered at the end of the year.
Objective 1: • K-5 Teachers will utilize Everyday Math materials and other resources (such as our Math and Tech. Instructional Specialist) to teach GLCEs under the Numbers and Operations strand more effectively and to meet the needs of all students. Steps taken to implement the objective: • All teachers have been participating in MMPI training and workshops. • Successmaker has been revamped to address Michigan GLCE’s • Teachers have been provided with manipulatives to help them facilitate hands-on learning • Teachers have been instructing students in the use of problem solving strategies

Is It Working? Is the objective implemented to the expected level based on the plan? All teachers are participating in MMPI Training and are beginning to implement the strategies in their classrooms. All teachers are teaching problem solving strategies to their students. Are the students making progress based on the original goal? Teachers have noted through anecdotal observation that student interest has been heightened though the use of the MMPI and problem solving strategies. We are still collecting data, but student work demonstrates an increased level of student achievement. There seems to be a positive correlation at this time between the implemented strategies and student achievement.
Objective 2 K-5 teachers will assess student mastery of the GLCEs regularly by administering assessments. Subsequently, teachers will be in tune with student needs and will teach diagnostically to help students master the GLCEs. Steps taken to implement the objective: Our teachers are administering MMPI student inventories and using pre and post assessments from Everyday Math to assess student progress and inform instruction. Brigance scores were collected for our kindergarten students.

Objective K-5 Teachers will promote a strong math culture. Steps taken to implement the objective: A math month has been planned for February, which will conclude with a math night, where students will demonstrate their learning of math strategies and concepts.

What’s Next? • We need to find an alternative to the MEAP assessments we had planned to administer three times this year. It will not work for our special needs students and is too bulky for our teachers to correct and analyze over and over again. We need access to something like CWCA several times a year to check progress, and a test for Kindergarten and first grade. • We need to schedule our monthly parent math help nights. • We need to implement weekly, building wide, problem solving events. • We need to schedule staff meetings to look at collected student data.
