  1. Recent Standardization Activities on NID Hyoung Jun KIM, TTA(ETRI)

  2. Highlight of Current Activities • Collaboration between ITU-T SG 16 and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 31 • Collaborative Team on ID and ID resolution protocol was established • Three joint texts are under development • ITU-T H.IDscheme | ISO/IEC 29174-1 • ITU-T H.ID-RA | ISO/IEC 29174-2 • ITU-T H.IRP | ISO/IEC 29177

  3. Highlight of Current Activities • Collaboration between ITU-T SG 17 and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 6 • Collaborative on Object Identifier (OID) was successfully achieved • Following Recommendations | International Standards were developed: • ITU-T X.672 | ISO/IEC 29168-1 • ISO/IEC 29168-2

  4. Highlight of Current Activities • Internet of Things (IoT) activities • ITU-T JCA-NID changed its name to JCA-IoT to cover IoT issues according to ITU-T TSAG agreement in Feb. 2011 • JCA-IoT isdeveloping “IoT Standards Roadmap” for the coordination on IoT standardization • ITU-T initiated IoT-GSI which aims to act as an umbrella for IoT standards development worldwide • IoT-GSI is developing “Overview of IoT” which is planned to be finalized in Feb 2012

  5. Strategic Direction • Observations • As there is no clear definition on IoT from technical standardization point of view, it urgently needs to common definition between SDOs and Consortia • Also, it is not clear that the relationship with other technologies such as M2M, USN, NID, etc., it urgently needs to clearly define the relationship among those technologies

  6. Strategic Direction • Global Harmonization of Internet of Things Standardization Activities • In order to avoid overlapped efforts for IoT standards activities among the SDOs and Consortia • In order to not to give unnecessary confusion to industries for their adoption • To encourage relevant SDOs for their efficient standards activity

  7. Challenges • Fragmented Standards • Many SDOs and Consortia are developing technical standards which are considered as closely related with IoT • Lack of basic framework of standards (e.g., Concept, Terms & Definition, Relation with similar technologies) • Some current/possible overlaps of standardization activities among the SDOs and Consortia

  8. Next Steps / Actions • Establishment of Global Collaborations for IoT Standardization activities • To promote necessary information exchange and discussions on IoT standards among the SDOs • To develop the harmonized standards roadmap on IoT in more collaborative ways • To encourage the joint standards activities

  9. Proposed Resolution • It is proposed to modify the resolution GSC-15/03 • (for Recognizing) h) that NID technologies are one of the key enabler of Internet of Things (IoT); and i) that the ITU-T has begun work on global standardization for IoT • (for Considering) f) that the ITU has initiated development of Recommendations related to IoT and has established an IoT coordination mechanism; and that SDOs are developing international standards for aspects of the IoT solution; and

  10. Proposed Resolution • (Resolves) 3) to promote the development of Recommendations or Reports for globally compatible standards related to IoT applications; 5) to encourage the ITU-T, PSOs, other standards bodies and fora to cooperate in order to develop harmonized, globally-compatible, IoT-related standards and for PSOs, other standards bodies, and fora to designate representatives to ITU-T’s “Joint Coordination Activity on Internet of Things”; and 6) to encourage the ITU-T, PSOs, other relevant standards bodies and fora/consortia to collaborate in order to enable a globally interoperable ID system for IoT considering all possible solutions such as OID (Object Identifier).

  12. List of Standards • ITU-T H.IDscheme | ISO/IEC 29174-1, Information technology – UII scheme and encoding format for Mobile AIDC services – Part 1: Identifier scheme for multimedia information access triggered by tag-based identification • ITU-T H.ID-RA | ISO/IEC 29174-2, Information technology – UII scheme and encoding format for Mobile AIDC services – Part 2: Registration procedures • ITU-T H.IRP | ISO/IEC 29177, Information technology – Automatic identification and data capture technique – Identifier resolution protocol for multimedia information access triggered by tag-based identification • ITU-T X.672 | ISO/IEC 29168-1, Information technology – Open Systems Interconnection – Object Identifier Resolution System • ISO/IEC 29168-2, Information technology – Open Systems Interconnection – Procedures for the Object Identifier Resolution System Operational Agency
