  1. How to use a dictionary I can use a dictionary to find meanings of words.

  2. Where can I find a Dictionary • In the Library Reference section • In the Library on the Dictionary stand • Your hands! You have your very own dictionary now!

  3. What information can I find about a word? • Pronunciation • Definition or word meaning • information about the word • How to use the word in a sentence • Part of speech • Origins or root • Variant spellings for the same word (ax or axe)

  4. Guide words • The two Guide words at the top of each page Last word on the page First word on the page

  5. The First Guide Word • is the first word on the page

  6. The Second Guide Words • tells you the last word on the page

  7. Entry Words • Your word needs to fall in between these two guide words

  8. How it’s in order • The words are all in alphabetic (A-B-C) order.

  9. Definitions • There may be more than one definition for each word

  10. Don’t Give Up • If you don’t find the word, don’t give up. You might need to check several possible spellings before finding the word

  11. Special Sections for some Dictionaries • Foreign words or phrases • Abbreviations • Addresses of colleges • population of cities and countries

  12. Other information that can be found in a Dictionary • English to metric conversion tables • Maps • Presidents of the United States • Explanations of common symbols • "How to Use a Dictionary"

  13. Mystery Word • I can listen attentively to the clues given to guess the word. • I can keep the word in my head until asked to speak it out loud. • NOW, LET’S PLAY!

  14. Dictionary Scavenger Hunt • I can use my dictionary to answer questions. • I can work at a level 1 with a partner. • I can work the entire time. • I can use my best handwriting on my work.
