Guessing Word Types Strategically Part 1: In each sentence, decide if smotch is a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. 1. We usually smotch everyday. 2. He’s a very smotch person. 3. They saw the long smotch. 4. She runs smotchly. 5. I am smotcher than you. 6. The small girl was smotching. 7. The smotch, ugly, white box sat on the desk for weeks. 8. Smotches never get better.
Ways to identify word type • Position in the sentence (SVO) • Endings (-ed, -ly, -ing – but be careful!) • If you know the meaning in Spanish, you might know the word type • Process of elimination • Recognize common sentence patterns • The/a/an + adj. + noun • Noun + {BE} + adj.
Practice with Fake Words Part 2: Use the dictionary definitions, the sentence context, and the word type to decide the meaning of splosh in each sentence below. Using the Online Dictionary • Farmers are responsiblefor making sure that the people involved in their operations follow the guidelines established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). • What type of word is it? • Look up in English-English dictionary • If you still don’t understand, look up in Spanish-English dictionary • Be sure to choose the definition appropriate to the context!!!
Activity • Choose 3 new words from the reading • Determine the word type (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) • Look up the definition in www.merriam-webster.com • Choose the definition that is appropriate for the context • Fill in the chart
