FALLING TIME Raynaldo 6B
Problem • What will happen if thick liquid and thin liquid is mixed up together and the small ball is dropped? Will it go faster or slower?
Background research • The liquid will fill up the shape of a container. If some water is poured (H2o) it will fill up the bottom of the cup first and then fill the rest. The top part of a liquid will usually have a flat surface. The flat surface is the result of gravity pulling on some substances that holds chemical
Hypothesis • If I put the ball bearing in a thicker liquid such as honey, then the duration of the ball bearing to reach the bottom surface will be much slower than the other liquid materials for the ball bearing to reach.
Variables • Independent: liquid types and amount of liquid(3/4) • Dependent: Duration • Control: Size of bottle(texture), size of ball bearing. Temperature of liquid water
EQUIPMENT • Bottle • Ball bearing • Stop watch • Marker/Magic marker
Material • Different types of liquid • Water
Steps • Pour a small glass bottle about ¾ full of 'cooking oil’(or others) and mark the level of the liquid with a magic marker. This mark will be used when testing the other liquids so that a constant level is used and the liquids can be properly compared. • Drop a small ball bearing (about 10mm diameter) into the liquid in the bottle and use a stopwatch to time the number of seconds it takes for the ball bearing to fall to the bottom of the bottle. • Do the procedure two more times, and each time record the results to claim(have) the average falling time for each of the liquids tested. • Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the 'baby oil', 'syrup’(or others) and other substances you might want to test. • Draw up a data chart to compare the viscosity of various liquid substances.
Conclusion • My Hypothesis is correct, because the thicker liquid gives more protection for the gravity to pull the ball bearing to the bottom surface. So the duration of the thicker liquid is much slower than the other liquids, even they have different process.
