  7. What Do I Need To Do To Succeed In This Class? • Simple answer is STUDY. • READ YOUR BOOK!!!!!!!!! • Produce a study guide for each chapter we cover. • Do NOT miss lecture AND lab meetings. • Invest TIME (for some of you, lots of time). • Stay MOTIVATED. • Ask Questions. • Do ALL of your assignments. • Use ALL of the resources available to you (book, lab manual, tutoring center, etc.)

  8. What Should I not do? • Students who refuse to do their part will NOT succeed in this class. • Do not miss class or lab. • Do not cram for the exam (IT DOES NOT WORK, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CLASS).You have to STUDY and REVIEW every week. • Do not simply copy answers from your classmates (That person will not help you while you are taking the exam). • Do not forget to hand in your assignments (Have your assignments ready to hand in before you come to class, EVERYTIME). • Do not forget to go look at your graded quizzes and/or exams.

  9. What Do You Think I Should Do (Weekly) To Succeed? • Before Lecture: • Preview the chapter for the week • Survey the chapter sections. • Look at the pictures and read the figure legends. • If the book has a chapter summary at the end, go through it. • Become familiar with the terminology used in the chapter (make a list of all the words or flashcards). • Identify English words that you are not familiar (make a list of all the words or flashcards). • If the chapter has any general biology content, it is expected that you study that on your own using your book and the General Biology Review Module (Go To Tutoring-Building 7).

  10. What Do You Think I Should Do (Weekly) To Succeed? • On Lecture Day: • Bring your book, laptop, notebook, copies of any exercise that we might be doing that day. • Bring any completed assignment that you need to hand in (write your name on it and make sure it is presentable). • DO NOT USE OR EVEN LOOK AT YOUR CELL PHONE • Turn it OFF, if you are not using it for recording (to avoid the temptation). • The ONLY permitted use for your cell phone is for recording and using it for class activities. THAT IS IT. You will be asked to leave class for any other use of the cell phone. That also includes if you leave the classroom to use your cell phone. • Stay focused on the things we are doing in class. • Ask questions and work with your classmates. • Show up, on time, stay the whole time, and stay AWAKE. • Record the professor’s lecture AND take notes. • Do all the activities the professor provides you during class (actually try them, do not just copy things).

  11. What Do You Think I Should Do (Weekly) To Succeed? • After Lecture: • Use active reading strategies to read the chapter. • Produce an EFFECTIVE study guide of the chapter. • STUDY your summary (watch videos on YouTube or Khan Academy). • Practice the content. • Answer the questions at the end of the chapter. • Do all assignments provided to you by your instructor. • Use all your resources. • You can practice on Quizlet or any other site (Khan Academy). • Keep the material fresh to prepare for the lecture quiz and exam, especially the final exam.

  12. What Do You Think I Should Do (Weekly) To Succeed? • Before Lab: • Preview the lab book (read it-study guide it). • Do the Pre-Lab Exercise. • Relate the information given to you in the lab book with the information in your textbook and lecture, when possible. • Diagram or summarize what you will be doing in the lab so that you are well prepared to do the lab. • Make sure you know the lab objectives and the terminology used.

  13. What Do You Think I Should Do (Weekly) To Succeed? • On Lab Day: • Show up on time and stay the whole time. • Bring your lab book. • Make sure you are wearing closed-toe shoes. • PAY ATTENTION to the lab instructions and take notes (record professor). • Do the lab with your lab partners. • After Lab: • Do the Post-Lab Exercise • Keep material fresh in your mind by reviewing it for the lab quiz and lab exam.
