  1. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THEWUFFDAPROGRAM LECTURE AND TURORIAL FOR CHAPTER 21 FEED FORMULATION BASICS POULTRY NUTRITION AND FEEDING

  2. Chapter 21 Section I. INTRODUCTION

  3. FORMULATION PROGRAM CAPABILITIES • SOLVE A SERIES OF EQUATIONS • MINIMIZE OR MAXIMIZE PARAMETERS • FEED COST • ANY NUTRIENT LEVEL

  4. Chapter 21 Section I I. THE BASIC FEED FORMULATION PROBLEM

  5. EXAMPLE PROBLEM • CORN CONTAINS 8.8% PROTEIN, 3.43 Kcal / Kg & COSTS $15.33 PER 100 KG. • SOYBEAN MEAL CONTAINS 48.5% PROTEIN, 2.44 Kcal/Kg ME / Kg & COSTS $23.10 PER 100 KG • THE KG OF CORN PLUS THE KG OF SOYBEAN MEAL SHOULD EQUAL 100 • THE FEED SHOULD CONTAIN EXACTLY 2.97 Kcal ME / Kg AND AT LEAST 23% PROTEIN

  6. EXAMPLE PROBLEM QUESTION • WHAT IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE COMBINATION OF CORN AND SOYBEAN MEAL THAT MEETS THESE RESTRICTIONS?

  7. EXAMPLE PROBLEM QUESTION • WHAT IS THE LEAST – COST FORMULA THAT MEETS THESE REQUIREMENTS?

  8. EQUATIONS TO SOLVE • X = POUNDS OF CORN • Y = POUNDS OF SOYBEANS • X + Y = 100 • 3.43 X +2.44 Y ≥ 2.97 (100) • 8.8 X + 48.5 Y = 23 (100)

  9. Chapter 21 Section III. A GRAPHIC SOLUTION TO THE BASIC PROBLEM

  10. GRAPHICAL SOLUTION

  11. GRAPHING TO FIND SOLUTIONS FOR 2 INGREDIENTS AND 2 NUTRIENTS IS POSSIBLE • MORE NUTRIENTS OR INGREDIENTS MAKES THE SOLUTION VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND • COMPUTER PROGRAMS, LIKE EXCEL AND SEVERAL COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS, MAKE LEAST-COST FEED FORMULTION FEASABLE WITH MANY INGREDIENTS AND NUTRIENTS

  12. Chapter 21 Section IV. A LINEAR PROGRAMMING SOLUTION TO THE BASIC PROBLEM

  13. WUFFDA • WUFFDA IS A WORKBOOK THAT RUNS IN MICROSOFT EXCEL • WUFFDA WAS DESIGNED FOR 25 INGREDIENTS AND 34 “NUTRIENTS” • “NUTRIENTS” INCLUDE THINGS LIKE DRY MATTER, NUTRIENT RATIOS & INGREDIENT CATEGORIES (LIKE FORAGES, CONCENTRATES, & ANIMAL PROTEIN PRODUCTS).

  14. THE PROGRAM OPENS ON THE TITLE PAGE

  15. CLICKING ON THE INGREDIENTS TAB OPENS THE INGREDIENT COMPOSITION MATRIX. ENTER FEED COMPOSITION, COST AND LIMITS DATA IN THIS WINDOW DATA CAN BE STORED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE (NOT VISIBLE) AND RECALLED LATER WHEN NEEDED

  16. CLICKING ON THE NUTRIENTS TAB OPENS THE WINDOW FOR NUTRIENT LIMITS ENTER NUTRIENT REQUIREMENT AND TOXICITY DATA IN THIS WINDOW DATA CAN BE STORED ON THE RIGHT OF THE PAGE AND RECALLED LATER WHEN NEEDED

  17. CLICKING ON THE FORMULATE TAB OPENS THE MAIN FEED FORMULATION WINDOW MAKE NO CHANGES IN THIS WINDOW!

  18. CLICKING ON THE GRAPHS TAB OPENS A WINDOW SHOWING HOW NUTRIENT LEVELS COMPARE TO REQUIREMENTS

  19. CLICKING ON THE FEED SPEC TAB OPENS A WINDOW DESIGNED FOR PRINTING FORMULA DETAILS THE TOP OF THIS PAGE SHOULD BE CUSTOMIZED WHEN PRINTING WITH THE NAME OF THE FEED AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD

  20. CLICKING ON THE MIXING SHEET TAB OPENS A WINDOW DESIGNED FOR PRINTING SPECIFIC AMOUNTS OF A FEED TO BE MIXED THE TOP OF THIS PAGE SHOULD BE CUSTOMIZED WHEN PRINTING WITH THE NAME OF THE FEED AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD

  21. THE OTHER TABS LEAD TO SPREADSHEETS WITH STORED DATA THAT CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO THE INGREDIENT COMPOSITION SPREADSHEET

  22. Chapter 21 Section V. PROCEEDURES A. THE BASIC PROBLEM

  23. TYPE IN: CORN FOR INGREDIENT 1 SOYBEAN MEAL FOR INGREDIENT 2 ENERGY FOR NUTRIENT 1 & PROTEIN FOR NUTRIENT 2

  24. ADD THE NUTRIENT VALUES AND COST FOR EACH INGREDIENT

  25. ADD THE LIMITS FOR NUTRIENTS ON THE NUTRIENTS SPREADSHEET

  26. TO SOLVE THE ENTERED PROBLEM, GO TO THE FORMULATE SPREADSHEET AND CHOOSE “TOOLS”, “SOLVER” AND ”SOLVE”

  27. THE WUFFDA PROGRAM HAS A SERIES OF EQUATIONS AND INEQUALITIES ALREADY ENTERED MASH THE SOLVE BUTTON

  28. OOPS! WHAT HAPPENED?

  29. THE PROGRAM TRIED TO FIND A SOLUTION WITH ZEROS FOR MAXIMUMS

  30. INSERT 100 FOR THE MAXIMUMS ON THE INGREDIENTS SPREADSHEET

  31. AND ON THE NUTRIENTS SPREADSHEET

  32. FROM THE FORMULATE SPREADSHEET, CHOOSE: TOOLS SOLVER & SOLVE, AGAIN AND NOW IT SHOULD WORK!

  33. RESULTS ARE DISPLAYED ON THE FORMULATE SPREADSHEET

  34. AND ON THE FEED SPEC SPREADSHEET

  35. AND ON THE GRAPHS SPREADSHEET

  36. Chapter 21 Section V. PROCEEDURES B. ADDING INGREDIENTS TO THE FORMULATION

  37. ENTER NEW INGREDIENTS ON THE INGREDIENT SPREADSHEET

  38. WHEN YOU GET AN OPTIMAL SOLUTION, GO TO THE “FEED SPEC” WINDOW YOU MAY GIVE THIS FEED A UNIQUE NAME, SOMETHING OTHER THAN “EXAMPLE FEED”, AND PRINT YOUR RESULTS

  39. Chapter 21 Section V. PROCEEDURES C. THE COST OF FEED RESTRICTIONS

  40. BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES, COPY THE % CORN,% SOYBEAN MEAL, & FORMULA COST TO THE CHAPTER 21 WORKSHEET, PAGE 21-9

  41. CHANGE THE MAXIMUM PROTEIN LEVEL FROM 23 TO 100

  42. AFTER SOLVING THE PROBLEM WITH NO MAXIMUM ON THE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN, AGAIN COPY THE % CORN,% SOYBEAN MEAL, AND FORMULA COST TO THE CHAPTER 21 WORKSHEET, PAGE 21-9 • DO THE SAME AFTER YOU’VE CHANGED THE COSTS OF THE CEREALS

  43. Chapter 21 Section V. PROCEEDURES D. ADDING NUTRIENTS TO THE FORMULATION

  44. ENTER NEW NUTRIENT DATA ON THE INGREDIENT COMPOSITION SPREADSHEET

  45. AND ADD NUTRIENT RESTRICTIONS ON THE NUTRIENTS SHEET & PRINT YOUR RESULTS

  46. FEED FORMULATION BASICS • Print your formulations’ Feed Specification sheet • Attach the print out to the Chapter 21 Worksheet and hand it in when all 4 lessons are complete.
