Leaders • Emergent - leader emerges from a group • Prescribed - A designated leader • Autocratic - Takes control, little or no consultation • Democratic - Listen and consult • Laissez-faire - Anything goes! A good leader will often use all these styles, depending on the situation

The transitional process…. • Making the transition from year 11 to sixth form, you may go through the following processes……. Forming Storming Norming
Forming • Cautiously explore the boundaries of acceptable behavior • Transition from individual to acceptance status • Testing the leader's guidance both formally and informally • Excited and interested
Storming • Resisting tasks or rules. • Resisting good suggestions. • Sharp fluctuations in attitude • Arguing, even when you agree on the real issues. • Defensiveness, competition, and choosing sides. • Questioning the wisdom of those appointed as leaders (teachers / committee). • Establishing unrealistic goals. • Disunity, increased tension, and jealousy
Norming • Acceptance of the team, ground rules, roles in the team, individuality of fellow team members • Emotional conflict is reduced • Cooperation is increased
Remember this: If you can identify which phase of the process you are in (forming, storming or norming) you can identify ways to adapt, overcome, lead and build your team
