  1. Edinburgh Dune Application Franz Muheim 24 January 2017 Dune IB meeting • Edinburgh PPE group • Who are we? • PPE activities • Dune application • People • Expertise • Interests Franz Muheim

  2. Who are we? • Particle Physics Experiment (PPE) Group • Research group in Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics - IPNP • Partners in IPNP are Particle Physics Theory & Nuclear Physics • part of School of Physics at Edinburgh University • PPE members • 8 faculty - of which 3 are applying to join DUNE • ~15 senior scientists, postdocs and technical staff • ~15 PhD students Franz Muheim

  3. PPE Activities • History of PPE Edinburgh • Group was a member in NA31/48, Aleph, Babar • Considerable expansion over last decade • Research focussed mainly on Large Hadron Collider • Current PPE Activities • ATLAS – analysis and upgrade • LHCb – analysis and RICH upgrade • Dark Matter – LUX & LZ • Hyper-K • GridPP • Future Plans • Consolidate LHC and dark matter effort • Build up neutrino physics activity Franz Muheim

  4. PPE Edinburgh @ Dune • Personnel • 3 academics – Peter Clarke, Franz Muheim (PI), Matt Needham initially at 0.2 FTE level, ramping up • 1 PDRA for first 2 years • Technical support • Technical expertise • Detector development • photon detectors - Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors for LHCb • LHCb silicon tracker, ATLAS ITK upgrade • Babar readout electronics, LHCb trigger • Computing • GridPP – UK’s Distributed Computing for Data-Intensive Research • Data storage, simulation • GPUs, multiprocessors, multi threading Franz Muheim

  5. PPE Edinburgh @ Dune II • Interest in Dune • Dune DAQ • Data handling – optimise data flow from detector to DAQ computing farm, data compression, trigger, network • Fits well with expertise and UK plans – bid submitted this week • Photon detectors – PPE group is working with LAPPDs • Neutrino physics - CP violation • Data fitting, data reconstruction • Alignment and calibration • Neutrino nucleon interactions • Summary • Edinburgh PPE group applies to join the Dune collaboration • Dune is an exciting project and we very much want to be part of it • Plan to ramp up effort during next two years Franz Muheim
