Scottish parliament • The Scottish Parliament Building is at the foot of The Royal Mile
Holyrood Palace • David I built an abbey here. Later kings decided to live here and not the cold Edinburgh castle. • In 1501 James IV cleared the ground close to the Abbey and built a Palace for himself and his bride. • Other kings added to it until we have the present building
Royal Mile • The City of Edinburgh grew out from the Castle. • The first houses in Edinburgh were built on the area in front of Edinburgh Castle, and then the house building continued down the High Street towards the Royal Palace of Holyrood House. • These streets form a single street known as The Royal Mile. • The Royal Mile got its name as the Scottish kings and queens travelled to and fro between the Palace of Holyrood House and Edinburgh Castle -.
St Giles • St Giles was built during the reign of King David I. The church was originally granted to the Lazarites, and its dedication was to St Giles as the patron saint of lepers. Over the years the church grew aisles along each side, plus transepts and a tower over the crossing. • John Knox who led the Reformation in Scotland preached a famous sermon here He went on to become Minister of St Giles' and his statue now stands in the nave.
