The Process A Feedback Loop • Water Pressures created a model of engagement that can be easily replicated: • The public TV station airs “Water Pressures: A Documentary” and makes it available online for students to watch. • With the help of the BEA (Broadcast Education Association) , the public TV stations reach out to local colleges or universities. • The college students create 2-minute videos and 400 word blogs about a local water issue. • These videos and blogs are posted on public TV, WaterPressures.org, and IBM’s 'Students for a Smarter Planet’ websites.

  11. Water Pressures Engagement: We have already created this model over the past two years with Chicago’s WTTW11, Northwestern University, and IBM’s Student’s for a Smarter Planet.

About WTTW • WTTW reaches 1.5 million weekly viewers with public affairs, arts, nature, science, history and how-two programs on four distinct channels: WTTW11, WTTW Prime, CREATE an V-Me, our Spanish language channel • 12 hours devoted each weekday & weekend mornings to educational and entertainment programming for children. • While the station’s primary focus has been uniquely local, we continue to produce a wide variety of programs for national and international audiences.

Attracting Younger Viewers: • Though, on average, Public TV viewers skew 50+, particular programs can draw a younger audience. • For example, the limited series America Revealed posted a 14% increase in Viewers 18-39. Both the subject matter (what makes America tick) and the host (Yul Kwon, an ex-contestant of the Survivor reality show) helped draw younger viewers. • With the right promotion (especially social media), select programs and/or series can help reconnect younger viewers to Public TV.

Impact of Water Pressures with PTV Station Educational Engagement • It’s part of our mission to get out in the community – especially important because as TV/Radio stations, it’s easy to become insular. • WTTW continues to “dial up” our community engagement through events like the Water Pressures screening at Northwestern University. • By engaging students, we are making them aware of Public TV as a resource for them. • We can demonstrate, via documentaries like Water Pressures, that we are involved in issues that are important to them. • WTTW can also use these college/university events as a way to recruit new filmmakers, web developers and bloggers and gain new content for the station and the system.

Water Pressures Engagement: Screenings and engagement at other campuses: • University of North Carolina – • Fall 2010 - University of North Carolina conference "Water & Health: Where Science Meets Policy" - 350 participants • Illinois Center for Broadcasting – Working with a city media school in the heart of Chicago – 250 students and faculty. • Broadcast Education Association (BEA) - Conference in Las Vegas. • Media Attendance: 1,581 • Number of Countries: 59

  25. Northwestern University – Hundreds of students involved from numerous student groups. A University of over 22,000 students and faculty. • Environmental Policy and Culture (EPC) • Global Water Brigades • Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED) Columbia University Water Center – Film screening at a campus with 6,673 undergrads. Beth Emet Synagogue - Evanston, IL Film screening for a congregation of 1000 families. Indian Development Service (IDS) – Conference on water scarcity attended by 200+ professionals Feinberg School of Medicine (Northwestern University) Masters of Public Health Department screening -710 enrolled

One.org • Used the film “Water Pressures: A Documentary” as part of the One Campus Challenge to inspire action on college campuses. • One.org was founded by U2’s Bono and is linked to from 5,310 different websites. • The One Campus Challenge reaches 0ver 100 college campuses. YWCA Awarded Water Pressures Producer Dr. Ann Feldman, PhD one of the women of the year for 2011 at a ceremony attended by over 500 contributors. Center for Civic Engagement - Hosted Dr. Feldman as part of the Community Research Workshop

  28. For the past two years, we have worked with students from India, China, the Dominican Republic, and the U.S. who have created short videos and blogs about local water issues.

  29. Short videos and blogs are the media/activism tools of college students. • WaterPressures.org features videos and blog post created by students all over the world.

Media and Environmental Organizations at College Campuses • Aasche (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) - 785 chapters  • Rotaract (part of Rotary International) - 8,400 clubs in 170 countries • Global Water Brigades - 609 chapters • ESW (Engineers for a Sustainable World) - 29 colleges

BEA’s Mission The Broadcast Education Association’s exists to support faculty members in teaching, research, and creative endeavors; to assist faculty in reaching professional growth by creating opportunities; and to connect the electronic media industry to the classroom. We like creating, telling, writing and producing important stories.

  32. How BEA will help link colleges… Through newsletters, social media and our annual convention we connect with: • 1,500 student members • 1,000 faculty members • 275 colleges/universities All interested in traditional research and creative endeavors.

  34. Our Goals: • To interest college students in watching public TV. • The demographic: • Only 6% of PBS’ total adult audience is age 18-24. • 5% of our total adult audience (18+) is currently a student at a college or university, and 30% of our A18-21 audience is a student.  Source:  MRI 2012
