You may have to choose “All Programs” and find it in Microsoft Office. • Type today’s laptop expectations: • Ask the teacher to pick up or move the laptop. • Do not touch the screen. • Gently press the keys and keep your hands clean.

Explore • Mouse • Using the mouse, move the cursor (arrow) around the screen. • Without clicking any buttons, pause the cursor over some different elements at the top of your screen so labels pop up. • You should be on the “Home” tab.

Double-Spaced • Click on the white space. • Hold down the H until it spans two lines.

12-Point Font (Select 2) • Click on your letters to deselect. • Hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard while you press the letter A button to select. • ctrl + A = select all
12-Point Font • Explore the “Font” box at the top of your page. • Find the two ways to change the font size. • Make sure it is size 12.
Times New Roman • Deselect the text. • Double-click the text to select it again.
Times New Roman • Explore the fonts in the drop-down menu next to the font size. • Try as many fonts as you can. • Make the font Times New Roman.
Black Ink • Keeping your text highlighted, find the button in the “Font” box that changes the font color. • Do not be fooled by the highlight tool. • Change your font to a color besides black.
MLA Heading • Select all and delete your current text. • Let’s type up an MLA heading. • Follow along; the necessary information will be on each slide.

MLA Heading • Highlight your title, Thanksgiving Moment. • In the “Paragraph” box, find the tool to center your title (do not use “Tab”). • Click the button with the centered lines.
MLA Heading If your teacher is Ms. Kuehl and/or Ms. Cruz or is just Mr. Rosentel, make sure to write your teacher(s) name accordingly.
Selecting • Hit Enter and type the 1st sentence of your essay. • Click from the 1st word of the 1st sentence to the period. • This is another way of selecting.
Left-Justify • Click the align left button.
Indent • Click in front of the 1st word of the 1st sentence and hit Tab to indent the paragraph.
Saving • Options • Click on the disk picture. • Click on the Office button and then click “Save.” • Hold the Ctrl button while you hit the letter S. • Once you’ve saved a document, continue saving it while you work.
Margins – Word 2007 • All MLA assignments must have one-inch margins. • Click on the “Page Layout” tab at the top of the program. • Click the “Margins” button. • Change the margins of your paper. Try out different sizes. • What happens?
Writing Time • Use your “Thanksgiving Moment” assignment sheet to type your correct MLA heading. • When you think it’s perfect, start typing your essay. As you type, self-edit.
Saving and Accessing • There are many ways to save and access your digital work: • flash drives -- email • DropBox -- CDs • Google Drive • Let’s practice finding different places to save work.
Google Drive • Sign in to Gmail using your Pritzker email address. • Click on “Drive” at the top of the page • Click on the icon next to “Create.” • Choose “Files…” • Choose your essay. • Now you can access this from Google Docs every time you want to write an essay – for any class. Simply Save As and edit it. • Skip other methods to save and access
Email • Click “Mail” at the top of Google Drive to return to your Gmail. • Click “Compose” on the left.
Sending an Attachment • Type your own email address into the “to” box.

Sending an Attachment • Find your document. • If you saved to the desktop, click desktop.
Sending an Attachment • Click on the document you want, and click the “open” button.
Sending an Attachment • Your document is now attached to your email. • Every email provider is a little bit different, but they all follow these basic steps. • Write yourself a brief message, and hit send. • Now, you can open your document at home or at the library and continue to work. • Don’t forget to save it as soon as you’ve opened it on a new computer!
Thanksgiving Moment Draft • A typed draft is due tomorrow. We will be peer- and group-editing, so bring your best writing. • You must print your draft before you enter your Composition class. If it is not printed, it is not here.
