The Beginning -Scientists have determined that the universe began about 15 billion years ago -it began as a tiny burst of energy and expanded very quickly This is the “Big Bang Theory” Other theories were that it hasn’t changed since being formed (but all objects are moving away from each other very quickly, even now) -after about 400,000 years, matter began to “collect” and gather into gas clouds

  3. -These gases then formed galaxies, solar systems, and planets -the earth is about 4.6 billion years old We think that our solar system formed at the same time because of several facts A solar (star) system is a star with orbiting objects (planets)

Motions in our solar system All planets revolve around the sun in same direction Orbits of all planets are almost circular Most of the planets revolve in same plane Sun rotates in same direction as planets revolve, sun is in same plane as planets Most planets rotate in same direction as sun Most of the moons around planets revolve in same direction as planets around sun
