SCHOOL SAFETY: ELIMINATING BULLYING Pretoria, South Africa Brenda Hirsch April, 2012 MISSION STATEMENT: ”Our goal at the North American International School is to participate with parents in helping children to develop: by providing education which is outstanding in quality, using a primarily North American curriculum, by being sensitive to the educational needs of an international and culturally diverse body of children, by keeping families both informed and involved at all times, and by proactively fostering ethical, responsible, and caring behavior in individuals within our school community.” (“The north american,”)

FACTS Bullying exists in many forms. • “Nine out of 10 elementary students have been bullied by their peers.” (“Science daily,”) Name calling Rough conduct Gender difficulties Repeat quarrels Cultural conflicts • Effective bullying prevention involves awareness AND adult involvement. (“Safe and responsive,”) • Bullying negatively impacts a student’s ability to learn. (“Stop bullying,”) “Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. Most often, it is repeated over time.”(“Violence prevention works,”)

  5. TEACHERS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN PREVENTING BULLYING. When students are engaged in learning, discipline problems are greatly reduced.   6. ADMINISTRATORS CAN LEAD A SCHOOL-WIDE INITIATIVE. CHARACTER EDUCATION • Establish community values. • Create a community of fairness and caring. • Encourage students to think, feel, and act morally. (“Safe and responsive,”) Character Education Video

  7. PARENTS MUST BE INVOLVED. Parents can: TALK about bullying. • ENCOURAGE children to do what they love to build confidence. CHECK IN often with children about school, friends, problems. • MODEL kindness and respect. (“Stop bullying,”) “It is important that parents approach this situation in a calm manner and that parents keep records of facts in the situation. It is helpful if parents and school staff work together to resolve the issue.” (“Pacer’s national bullying,”)

  8. WE CAN EXPECT RESULTS. Effective bullying prevention programs include awareness and adult involvement. (“Safe and responsive,”)
