  3. What Food Does for You • It provides energy for daily activity • It gives you raw material that keeps you healthy • Eating is an enjoyable activity

  4. What Is Nutrition Science? -The study of how your body uses the food that you eat.

  5. Diet Is everything you eat and drink

  6. What is a Nutrient? A nutrient is a chemical substance in food that helps maintain the body. • Some provide energy. • All help build cells and tissues, regulate bodily processes such as breathing. • No single food supplies all the nutrients the body needs to function.

  7. The six Classifications of Nutrients • Vitamins • Minerals • Water • Protein • Carbohydrates • Fats

  8. Definition of a Calorie: • A unit of measure for energy in food • Nutrients that have Calories: • Proteins • Carbohydrates • Fats

  10. Carbohydrates Function: Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy. Food Sources: - Whole wheat breads - Rice - Pasta - Potatoes - Fruits - Vegetables

  11. Protein Function:Protein is essential for body growth and repair of body cells and tissues Food Sources: • Meats • Eggs • Fish • Nuts • Beans

  12. Fats Function:Fats are 2nd source of energy and it regulates body temperature Food Sources: • Butter - Cheese -Beans • Eggs - Meat - Fish • Nuts

  13. Vitamins Function:Vitamins help regulate body functions. Food Sources: • Fruits • Vegetables • Whole grain foods

  14. Minerals Function:Minerals help your body work properly. Food Sources: • Milk • Meats • Whole grain foods • Vegetables

  15. Water Function:Water is essential to hydrate us and carry nutrients through our bodies. Food Sources: • Juices - Fruits • Milk - Leafy Vegetables
