Contract • UC Davis – MK VIB Apr 11 • LANNAME – UCR Sched. May 13
Dynatest/CSIR HVS • Most widely used full scale APT device • Compatible data between machines • Potential collaboration • HVS International Alliance formed 2002 • http://www.hvsia.co.za/ • Next meeting Aug 19-20 2010
Development of the HVS • Late 60’s - Mk I • 1972 - Mk II • 1974 - Mk III • 1994 - Mk IV • 1997 - Mk V (Airfield) • 1998 - Mk IV Plus • 2005 – Mk VI • 2009 – Mk VIB
Dynatest/CSIR HVS Original Concept • Actual road network in-service pavement construction variable • Laboratory pavements may not be representative of in-service pavements • Need to be able to test ‘real’ pavements • HVS needs to be mobile and self-contained for operation at remote sites
HVS Mk IV Specifications • Computer - control & data • Load - up to 200 kN • Speed – 12.8 kph(29000 reps/day possible) • Test section - approx. 6 m x 1m • Uni- and bi-directional; 1m wander • Single, dual and aircraft test wheels • 23 x 3.7 x 4 m ; 45 tonnes • Mobile and self-powered
HVS Mk IV Plus Specifications • As for Mk IV • Widened beam • Dynamic load : ± 20% and 3 cycles • Tow end wheels straddle section • Radio LAN
HVS-A Mk V Specifications • Computer - control & data (radio lan) • Load - up to 440 kN • Speed – 12.8 kph(15000 reps/day) • Test section - approx. 12 m x 1.5 m • Uni- and bi-directional; 1.5 m wander • Single, dual and dual aircraft wheels • 36.3 x 4.2 x 5.1 m ; 102 tonnes • Mobile and self-powered
Dynatest/CSIR HVS Reliability and Durability • 3 Mk III’s built between 1974 and 1978 • 1978 to 1992 150 million repetitions or ~ 460 million ESAL’s • 1994 two Mk III’s refurbished and sold to Caltrans • Caltrans Mk III’s upgraded 2002 • Third Mk III semi - retired in 2004 • Currently back in service
Dynatest/CSIR HVS Productivity • HVS Mk III - Caltrans • 2 upgraded Mk III HVS’s produced 60 million repetitions (3 billion ESAL’s) in approx 9 years • av. 277778 reps/mo/HVS for 108 months • Now up to 72.5 million repetitions • Approx. 4+ billion ESAL’s (n = 4.2) • 111 different pavement sections tested
Dynatest/CSIR HVS Productivity • FDOT HVS Mk IV+ • 15.6 million 9 kip uni-directional repetitions in approx 8 years • 31.2 million bi-directional movements • Av. 325,026 movements/month for 96 months
HVS Mk VI Design • Reduce cost and make system upgradable to exceed Mk IV+ capabilities with low risk • Eliminate vehicle frame • Reduce complexity • Use turntable trailer axles to move laterally • On site mobility – use tractor or forklift • Long haul mobility – as for Mk IV or better • Load, speed, test section as for Mk IV or V • Single and dual wheels • Externally powered – line power or genset
HVS Mk VI Specifications • Computer - control & data • Load - up to 200 kN • Speed – 12.8 kph(29000 reps/day possible) • Test section - approx. 6 m x 1 m • Uni- and bi-directional; 1 m wander • Single, dual and aircraft test wheels • 23 x 3.06 x 3.3 m ; 34 tonnes • Mobile (external) and externally powered
HVS Mk VI Options • Increased length – 6.9m and 3.6 tonnes per extension • Load - up to 260 kN • Dynamic ± 20 % - approx 1 cycle/sec • Test section – incr. by 6m per extension • Alternatively approx 20 kphover 6m
