Use Clear, Concise Language 4 Main Principles: • Consistency • Clarity: straightforward • Accuracy • Brevity: simple & direct
Examples Instead of: “announced the names of” Write: “identified” Instead of: “It is unusual in the Legislature to have a conference with more than four members.” Write: “A conference committee with more than four members is unusual.”
Information/Content • Chronological approach most effective • Info not enough • Contain a focus • Sports stories: -go beyond the game -not just winners/losers -should contain stats Photo Caption
Forming Sentences Video Caption • Average length: 16-17 words • Break up long sentences • Avoid sudden shifts in writing • Do NOT use personal opinions in writing done in yearbook
Abbreviations • Abbreviate following months: Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., & Dec. • Spell out month unless with date; always capitalize • Do NOT use st, nd, rd, or th with dates • ex: Oct. 5 July 12
Ages/Numbers • Ages: - always expressed as numerals - ex: Michelle is 16 years old. - when using age as an adj., hyphenate - ex: A 25-year-old student... • Numbers: - one through nine spelled out (ex: two, three, four, etc.) - 10 and higher written as numerals - Sports scores: NOT written as numerals
Sports Stories • Go beyond the game/winners/losers • Provide stats Instead of: “The final goal was netted in the last five minutes by the DHS starting midfielder. Davis won 5-0.” Write: “After the final whistle, Davis secured their seventh consecutive win of the season with a score of 5- 0.”
Quotes • When quoting,use said, and avoid using others (like commented,declared ) • Not too lengthy or short • Summarizes the person's opinions, thoughts,and/or feelings • Support statements already made • Fragmentary quotes can be used to make clear the person's use of the word or phrase in a strong sense • When using partial quotes or any quotes , don't change the context of the original • Partial quotes should fit in grammatically into the sentence
