Scoring the COE Professional scorers Train using an exemplar paper, student responses, and a task-specific rubric Scorers must qualify to score Ongoing validity and inter-rater reliability checks Calibration training as needed Score each question within a task independently “Burst” scoring – score a single task at a time No scorer ever views a complete COE at one time
How do we arrive at a total student score? A student’s collection “burst scored” which means scoring one task at a time Each task in a collection is scored independently. Many scorers will have scored a single collection. When all tasks in a collection are scored, the student will receive a total score which represents their ‘best work’ for the collection
Total Score Points Year One total possible score 32 points Year Two total possible score is 24 points
State PerformanceStandard “Cut Score” Set The week of March 25-29 educators from across the state met in two committees to determine the recommended Year One & Year Two Cut scores for the Mathematics COE Their recommendations were sent to the Washington State Board of Education The State Board met on Friday March 29th and adopted the recommendations from the two committees
Year One & Year Two Cut Scoresfor the Collection of Evidence The Year One “Cut Score” is 24 points out of 32. This means a student must earn 24 out of 32 points on a Year 1 Math COE to meet standard or demonstrate proficiency. The Year Two “Cut Score” is 14 points out of 24. This means a student must earn 14 out of 24 points on the Year 2 Math COE to meet standard or demonstrate proficiency.
Augmentation Process Students not meeting standard, but within augmentation band, may submit 4 new tasks for scoring. The augmentation band for both Year 1 & Year 2 Math COE’s is 2 points. These new tasks, combined with the original COE, are used to determine whether the student meets standard. Students get a single opportunity to augment.
Reading, Writing, and Mathematics Submission Dates May 1, 2013 Any 12th grade students who are eligible to submit a full collection and Any students eligible to submit an augmented collection from the winter 2013 submission June 12, 2013 All students who meet all eligibility requirements in reading, writing and/or mathematics
