  1. Administering the Mathematics Collection of Evidence Kim Andersen, COE Science & Mathematics Specialist Anton Jackson, OSPI Mathematics Specialist May 2, 2013 5/2/2013

  2. Topics to be covered today 5/2/2013 Preparation to administer the Math COE The role of teacher assistance Student testing resources Room preparation Other issues for teachers & in class secure assessments

  3. Preparation for administration 5/2/2013 One of the great benefits for students of the State Collection of Evidence is that it may be administered in “chunks” OR parts by tasks or even by parts of a task. Before administering the COE in the classroom: Teachers should thoughtfully review the task and performance expectations using the content (PE’s) to guide instructional decisions. Teach & reteach the performance expectations included in the tasks in various contexts in the classroom until the students demonstrate proficiency.

  4. Preparation for administration 5/2/2013 In addition to teaching to the standards, teachers will want to prepare students by: Teaching & re teaching the related academic vocabulary Increasing student understanding of the context by teaching and re teaching the general vocabulary

  5. How to administer the Math COE • When student/s are ready – provide a secure testing environment that includes: • Working independently • No books, notes, or other materials • Proctoring by district staff • Calculators use according to OSPI policy http://www.k12.wa.us/Mathematics/CalculatorPolicy.aspx • Please check COE Math Webpage for more details at http://www.coe.k12.wa.us/Page/271 5/2/2013

  6. What is the role of teacher assistance? 5/2/2013 Teacher assistance occurs during the instructional time before a task is administered. The goal of teacher assistance is to prepare students for success in meeting performance expectations on a given task. The role of a teacher during administration of a task is to maintain an appropriate testing atmosphere by proctoring.

  7. Teacher assistance on Math COE 5/2/2013 May teachers provide feedback on COE tasks? Teachers may not provide any specific feedback on the COE. Just like any state assessment this is the student’s independent work without any assistance. All completed work samples must represent the student’s independent work. Editing done on extended time tasks must be solely based on the student’s review and self-evaluation of their own work.

  8. Basically, teacher instruction is teacher assistance? 5/2/2013 Yes, teachers who are preparing students for the COE through instruction are assisting them to succeed! Teachers with students enrolled in a semester or year long class have continued multiple opportunities to teach and reteach to the state standards before and between administering tasks in the classroom.

  9. Student resources while testing 5/2/2013 Students are allowed to have approved tools and manipulatives. Check DFA or Test and Item Specs. Students are allowed to have a calculator with a cleared memory, both before and after testing. Students are allowed the same sheet as for EOC (Formula Sheet) http://www.k12.wa.us/TestAdministration/TestProctorResources.aspx

  10. Room Preparation 5/2/2013 Prepare the classroom as you would to administer and End of Course exam. Cover or remove bulletin boards, posters, and classroom work as necessary to maintain a secure assessment. The COE should be administered in multiple sessions. Plan ahead to prepare your classroom for multiple administrations.

  11. Other COE Testing Issues 5/2/2013 Keep tests in a secure location. Between assessments, work with your building administrator to have a locked location to store tests safely, accessible only to district staff. On Demand versus extended response Extended response tasks may be taken out later for student edits; however, on demand tasks may not. Both need to be stored securely.
