  2. Reading • Reading is the process of making meaning of text. Students must be able to demonstrate their comprehension, their ability to analyze, and their critical thinking related to written text.

  3. Connection to WASL • The 10th grade WASL has 37 items distributed between the 20 literary and informational reading targets. • 26 multiple choice • 11 constructed responses • Based on grade level text

Reading Collection of Evidence • Guidelines for assembling a sufficient COE • The collection must include: • At least 8 and no more than 12 work samples that: Include at least four work samples each of which can be scored for more than one literary strand. Include at least four work samples each of which can be scored for more than one informational strand.

  6. Reading collection of evidence • Characteristics of the 8-12 work samples • Must include student’s description of the assigned text. • Must include work samples that include text-based evidence. • Must include an copy of the teacher’s assignment

  7. Reading Collection of Evidence • Each work sample must address at least two strands. A work sample that does not address two strands will be considered insufficient.

  11. Reading collection of evidence • There must be a minimum of two work samples that have been produced in an “on demand setting”. See introduction for definition of “on demand” • Characteristics of the 8-12 work samples

  12. Reading collection of evidence • All work samples must be based on text that is of a high school level of rigor. • Characteristics of the 8-12 work samples

  13. Required documents • Student information form • Work sample documentation form • Work sample sign off form

  14. Collection Must Not Include • Group response to a text • Work samples that do not reference text • Pages from workbooks • Analysis of anything other than text • Work samples with grades or teacher comments • Scoring guides/rubrics • Copies of text • Work that has not been produced by the student.
