Greeting the parent • Are they sick? • Is there ANYTHING I need to know • Were they sick this weekend. • Were they with someone else? • Are they tired, fed, diaper changed? • What is their mood today and why? • Say GOOD-BYE – It’s called GOOD bye for a reason. • Routine • Don’t linger • Don’t put down the parent LOOK LISTEN SMELL FEEL
Raise Your hand if... • You were afraid to go to a new school. • If you went to someone's house and hated the food you were served. • Had to go back to someplace that you didn’t like every day. • Had a pet die. • Have someone that you really liked to work with – quit. • Had a parent that re-married while you were a child. • Any one afraid of something that other people make fun of? • Had a lisp or other difference that others made fun of. Group Meeting TimeMorning Therapy • Eat your breakfast, drink your coffee. (No hot coffee in the classroom) • Start with exercise or music or both. Fun, dancing, move around. • Then, sit and take a moment to calm them. • Babies – sweep the forehead, calming touches and slower talking. • Older – how are you feeling? Feeling dolls or pictures. • Angry – remember if you feel this way today to go to the ANGER BOX. • SAD – remember if you feel this way go to the stuffed animal box. • Happy – remember if you feel this way – clap your hands.

Transition Tricks • Timer – let them know what happens if it isn’t done by the time the timer goes off – then follow through. • Who is my superhero – Button or sticker. • Step one – one finger in the air / Step two- two fingers in the air • Thumbs up/heads down– when they are done then go touch the thumbs and say a praise. • Sing – Transition songs are all over YouTube – use them. • Put your bottom on the rug. • We put on your walking shoes.

During Play Time • At The Easel – Smock, paint, paper at all times. • Water Play – Teach them how to do it! • The Magnetic Wall – Magnetic gears, letters, put magnets on the back of old puzzle pieces. • The Felt Wall – Glue pictures onto felt and cut them out. Old books. • Follow THEIR lead – let them decide what to build. • Teacher Talk – this is when the learning happens • House play – Peoples bodies belong to them. • Horse play – separate and change of center.
Questions you can ask – Create a problem. • Where does it go? • What can we do? • Do you have an idea? • What makes that sound? • Who is missing? • Can a paper bag fly? • Make an invention • Lets figure it out
Sand and Water Play • 14 T joints • 4 elbow joints with three pipe openings (for the top four corners) • 8 elbow joints (for the funnel area across the top) • 4 caps • 2 cross joints • 4 – 10 foot PVC pipes • PVC pipe cutters • Spray paint • PVC glue • Two under-the-bed tubs
Outdoor Play • Outdoor obstacle course • Clothes pin tag – each child gets 4 clothes pins on their backs. Run and take clothes pins off the shirts. When all your pins are gone you are out. • 4 Corners
Parents • Only contact is when there is a problem. • Invites or demands involvement in child’s school work. • Preserve dignity. • Calm - with Angry Parent
Initiation: FIRST CONTACT ALWAYS GOES WELL. • As soon as they have enrolled. • Introductory phone call • Letter to the home introducing yourself to the parents • Letter establishing expectations. Discussion What DO you expect from your parents? What SHOULD they expect from you?
Surprise a Parent – Positive Phone Call • Introduce yourself • Tell the parents what their child is studying • Invite the parents to an open house and/or other school functions • Comment on their child's progress • Inform them of their child's achievements (e.g., "Student of the Week") • Inform them of their child's strengths or share an anecdote • Research shows that school-home communication is greatly increased through personalized positive telephone contact between teachers and parents.
Positive Interaction – Conversation Starters • Smiley faces on worksheets • Exceptional work board – up front. • Stickers and stamps on children’s hands. • Photos of child sitting in teachers lap or being cuddled. • He said or did the cutest thing today…. • He couldn’t stop talking about.. tell me more
Problem? • Don’t wait too long. 2 weeks • The Blame Game = parents don’t care! • Must be face to face – emails sound harsh in an angry parents head. • Ask for help- psychologist trick. • STAY IN THE SOLUTION
