Joseph was the 17 year old favorite son Jacob-Israel, son of Rachel. His 10 older brothers had to work watching the sheep. Joseph stayed around the tents with Dad.
Joseph had a dream one night that all his brothers would bow down to him, he had another dream that his whole family would bow down. Then the brothers really hated him.
Jacob asks his favorite son to check on his brothers. • Really, he was being sent to see if the brothers were doing things wrong. He had done this before and gave Jacob a bad report. The brothers saw him coming and they said, • “let’s kill him, throw him in one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we will see what comes of his dreams!”
A group of traders happened to be going by and Judah had the idea of selling Joseph to the traders and making money also. • And they took him to Egypt.
The brothers were jealous of Joseph. He didn’t work, he was father’s favorite, and he had the expensive coat. He also had the dreams about the family bowing down to him. Jealousy leads to anger leads to rage and can destroy a person.
Joseph has been taken against his will to Egypt. • He is sold as a slave to a man by the name of Potiphar. I am sure that Joseph couldn’t see God working in all of this, but it says that the Lord was with Joseph Genesis 39:2, 3, 5
Joseph was the head slave in the household of a wealthy Egyptian. But there was a problem, the wife of Potiphar. She kept asking Joseph to come to bed with her and he refused. This went on day after day till one day the conditions were perfect for Potiphar’s wife. All the other slaves weren’t in the house, it was just her and Joseph. And she grabbed him, he ran, but she had his coat.
Potiphar was furious and had Joseph thrown in jail. • I don’t know what Joseph was thinking, but could it get any worse? • 39:20, 21“But while Joseph was there in prison, the Lord was with him; He showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in prison”
Then one day, Joseph gets 2 prisoners, officials of Pharaoh. They looked sad and Joseph asked and they had dreams the night before and they had no one to interpret the dreams. • “Do not interpretations belong to God, tell me your dreams.” 40:8 • Joseph added, “but when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.” 40:14
2 years after Joseph had interpreted the dreams for the officials, Pharaoh had a dream and no one could interpret it. The official who met Joseph in prison remembered that Joseph could interpret dreams and told Pharaoh about him. Why did the official forget Joseph and why did God wait 2 years to give Pharaoh the dream?
God brings things into your life to prepare you for what is ahead. We don’t understand it because we can not see ahead like God can see ahead. We can only see the moment and the past but the future belongs to God.
Joseph is brought before Pharaoh, he interprets the dream that there will be 7 years of abundant food for Egypt and then 7 years of famine.
42:6-9 Now Joseph was the governor of the land, the one who sold grain to all its people. So when Joseph's brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. 7 As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them. "Where do you come from?" he asked "From the land of Canaan," they replied, "to buy food." Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. 9Then he remembered his dreams about them.
Finally, the brothers come back for more food and then Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, I am Joseph! I can not imagine the look on the brother’s faces when Joseph said that. They thought they were going to die, they were terrified.
I don’t know what you have gone through in life. • Maybe there has been a lot of pain and suffering • And you may not understand what God is doing in your life. But when you put your life in God’s hands • When you decide to become a child of His, God begins to do a work in your life.
I don’t understand why God allows certain things to happen. But I do know that he has a plan. Go with God, trust in Him, and watch Him work in your life.
